I just watched Death Proof for the first time. I got a big Quentin Tarantino box set and it was the only movie in there I hadn't watched yet. I had seen Planet Terror before and wasn't too impressed (I feel "meh" about most of Rodriguez's movies), so I kept this one on the back burner. I was pleasantly surprised - not a Tarantino classic by any means, but as far as the whole "grindhouse" vibe goes, it nails it. Plus, I love Kurt Russell.

"The Secret in their Eyes" for the 3rd or 4th time. (the original - the remake is terrible)

It just doesn't get any better.

Wow, Django's dead last? Can I ask why? And Kill Bill v1 lower than v2? I think I rate 2 higher than a lot of people, but it's definitely not better than 1. Sticking with your convention:

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 04-25-2017 06:09 PM

seventh seal is in my top 10 or 20 films of all time. ****ing brilliant.

Key 04-25-2017 06:11 PM

The Wicker Man is also very good.

Frownland 04-25-2017 06:12 PM

All of you guys should go watch Hour of the Wolf. It is factually Bergman's best movie.

I'm not son. Okay maybe Persona is a little bit better.

Is it horror?

Yes, but it's very slow burning and psychological.

I'll have to pass I'm not a big fan of horror films in general.

Mondo Bungle 04-25-2017 06:20 PM

I wouldn't have it any other way

Except visceral body horror

And tastefully done maniac slashers

and space demons

and demons in space

generally gnarly demons

horror's my new favorite thing

I used to feel that way as well. There's a lot of crap out there, but I think horror is the most fertile genre for fascinating character studies. Fear is just plain interesting. If it's not your thing that's cool though.

Mondo Bungle 04-25-2017 06:25 PM

it's low key not cool

Frownland 04-25-2017 06:27 PM

It's melodic minor key of F played on an instrument with just intonation not cool if you know what I mean.

My biggest issue with the genre has always been the usage of cheap jump scares and gross out for the sake of gross out. Like Psycho is ten times scarier then say Cannibal Holocaust. Stuff like A Serbian Film feel pointless and might as well be a snuff film in my eyes.

The only horror film I can say that I genuinely love and enjoy is the sixth sense.

Psychological thrillers should not be confused with horror movies.. I feel like most of the good "horror" movies actually fall into the former category(in my limited movie watching experience). When I think horror, I think blood and guts from monsters and supernatural things, not Saw, Psycho, etc.. Psych thrillers can be gruesome, but don't have to be, and that isn't the point (which is why they are so much better).

Then stop watching bad horror movies and start watching good horror movies. Go watch Alien, or The Conjuring, or Night of the Living Dead, or Halloween, or Funny Games, or The Thing, or five million other awesome movies that aren't schlock.

Mondo Bungle 04-25-2017 07:31 PM

The Thing is literally too badass for it's own good

The Batlord 04-25-2017 07:35 PM

Yeah, you want some claustrophobic psychological horror that feels like a feature length Twilight Zone episode? Boom. The Thing.

Frownland 04-25-2017 07:37 PM

****ing Funmy Games dude. That ****'s awesome.

Everybody should watch this

Mondo Bungle 04-25-2017 07:38 PM

That sounds way more like Eraserhead

You can't blame the whole genre based on the muck of it. That's like writing off comedy because Paulie Shore sucks. Here's a few that don't do any of what you describe except for maybe a few jump scares. The ones Batlodd mentioned are great too.

The Witch
Hour of the Wolf
Rosemary's Baby
The Shining
The Babadook
The Others
Coherence (kinda more than a thriller tbh)
Eyes Without a Face
Repulsion
Eraserhead
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Creep
Bug

Mondo Bungle 04-25-2017 07:56 PM

No monsters no horror

Never watched it, come to think of it I've seen a decent chunk of Kubrick films (Stranglelove!) but I'm truly lacking one too many flicks in his filmography. I'm starting this tonight and watching Barry Lyndon tomorrow.

I don't consider alien a horror film. Great movie though. Rest of these I didn't enjoy except for the thing. That one is pretty good.

Mondo Bungle 04-25-2017 08:17 PM

I've always loved the suspense brewed by Predator so much. That is gripping.

I also like when they see it and just fire literally every single bullet into the woods for a good minute

Classic action Arnie cheese, legendary

Mondo Bungle 04-25-2017 08:25 PM

I'm by no means any sort if action expert but it's definitely the most engrossing one I've seen.

The Batlord 04-26-2017 05:19 AM

Best Arnold sci fi action horror movie is Terminator though.

Fixed it back. T2 is enjoyable but T1 still wins with a perfect gradual build of tension.
