Interesting satire on overnight fame in the music business. I enjoyed this film, and it has some great acting. But this could have been a very good film if the plot was better developed.

This is one seriously fucked up film. It seems like every scene in this loosely connected film depicts something completely wrong or bizarre. But it really is a brilliantly made film and is one that I will certainly revisit. Also bonus points for an extreme metal soundtrack.

Oh look, a movie with no point other than cringey scenes to make you cringe. Give 'em an Oscar.

Frownland 04-17-2017 04:37 PM

Just because it's an unpleasant experience doesn't mean it's a bad film.

Mondo Bungle 04-17-2017 04:58 PM

Just because it might not be a bad film doesn't mean I can't hate it anyway

I was just gonna say something like that, I'm sure it does whatever it's supposed to do but I don't like the movie.

Mondo Bungle 04-17-2017 05:20 PM

I'm gonna have to actually watch Rosemary's Baby

The Batlord 04-17-2017 05:31 PM

Without ruining anything about Rosemary's Baby, and assuming I know it's about a woman giving birth to the Anti-Christ, and there's a Satanic cult, what is the OMG reason I should watch it?

Mondo Bungle 04-17-2017 05:31 PM

I love slow burning horrors

As a Die Hard and Rambo fan I throw my full support behind this. Any horror movie that doesn't take its sweet ass time drawing me in is probably not gonna even have the competence to get me with a single jumpscare, let alone make me afraid to go outside for a cigarette after its done.

Another Sandler movie. Not bad, but not amazing. Something to watch late at night.

It is crazy well crafted and goes deep into its main character's mind. It also has a dark, brooding vibe and a lot of feminist social commentary but doesn't beat you over the head with it.

Good characterization, good atmosphere, and depth that is in service to the narrative are pretty much all I need to know.

Oriphiel 04-17-2017 06:47 PM

Rosemary's Baby is the Citizen Kane of horror movies; you'll either find it to be a masterpiece, or boring as fuck.

innerspaceboy 04-17-2017 07:23 PM

A friend of mine has been producing bit-perfect laserdisc captures of some great musical art films of the 80s. He sent me copies of Brian Eno's Thursday Afternoon and The Kitchen Presents: Two Moon July (1986) starring Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, David Byrne, Brian Eno, and others. TMJ really captures the explosion of the avant-garde pop scene in the 1980s.

It's great to have both the official DVD and the laserdisc of Thursday Afternoon, though neither are as true to the artist's intent as watching it on a CRT television flipped on its side.

Both are welcome additions to my library.

Here's the Eno film:

And a few highlights from Two Moon July:

Fun fact about Rosemary's Baby:

Spoiler for Spoiler:
When Mia Farrow gets the phone call from the actor who suddenly went blind, opening the career door for her husband, Polanski had Tony Curtis make the call without Farrow knowing it. Farrow and Curtis were friends so her confused reaction trying to place the voice was 100% genuine.

AWESOME and totally creepy movie. Essential.

The first Hellraiser is legitimately disturbing. I hated how Pinhead became some kind of generic killer in a slasher film later in the series. If there's one constant for horror movies, it's that a successful one will sequel itself into ridiculousness without fail.

I've been on a horror kick myself. Just rewatched The Fog (one of the few John Carpenter films that has taken me a little while to appreciate), Reanimator, Bride of Reanimator, 28 Weeks Later (this with 28 Days Later make up an excellent back to back watch - there are things 28 Days Later does better and things it lacks and vice versa), and the entire Friday the 13th series. I had only ever watched the first 2 and then Jason Takes Manhattan, so I had no idea what to expect for the other ones. Those movies go up and down, but every one of them was a great "I'm gonna turn my brain off for 90 minutes" movie. Personal favorites are part 3, part 4, and part 7.

Oriphiel 04-19-2017 11:15 AM

I have not. If you are recommending it, I'd be happy to check it out. Right now I've got these on the docket:

Nightmare on Elm Street runthrough (I've only ever really seen the first 2)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Phantasm runthrough (I've only seen the first one)

Frownland 04-19-2017 11:51 AM

All the horror people must see Calvaire, the French equivalent of TCM/Deliverance.

Yeah, I definitely recommend it, it's probably my favorite body-horror comedy.

Have fun with the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, they're cheesy as hell but they have their moments. Three is my personal favorite.

this is 1000% what I'm after Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) - IMDb

Frownland 04-20-2017 01:22 AM

http://pics.filmaffinity.com/The_Eye...9779-large.jpg
Eyes of My Mother

Let me start this off by saying what the **** man. That **** was weird.

This movie deserves a mention in the DSM because if it ever happened in real life, I would just point at this movie and say that Nicolas Pisce told you so. Eyes of My Mother draws you in with some gorgeous black and white scene setting before bashing your head in with some disturbing and bizarre twists and turns.

The movie focuses on a descent into madness. If I were you, I would go into it blind plotwise because the way the film transpired was totally conflicting with what I was expecting to happen (for better or worse, mostly the former). The stark imagery really makes the more visceral parts more effective, which makes this movie really hard to watch. A lot of it made me feel disturbed and gross. It really is a fascinating character study that could have been fleshed out a little better, but was still excellent on its own.

This was such a great horror film that I'm not sure if I ever want to watch it again. 5/5.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 04-20-2017 08:10 AM

you haven't let me down yet so i'll be checking that out at some point today

Opening night motherfuckers. Insanely solid shoot em' up. Any fan of John Woo or John Wick should appreciate this flick. Not to mention the director having directed incredibly great films in the past. 8/10. Support this film please.

Ah, already seen it many times Hustle and Shaolin Soccer are easily my two most nostalgic Chow films

Great fighting choreography, great comedy, great slapstick, great characters, great movie

Mondo Bungle 04-21-2017 04:38 PM

I wish Beyond the Black Rainbow was longer even at almost 2 hours, or that more stuff happened. But not in a "nothing happened" kinda way, there was some cool stuff that I definitely wanted to continue. I almost feel like the pacing works against it. Like, it really sucks you in that you're bummed out when it's done. I was at least. Very enjoyable.

oculus was ok but if ya liked it you must check out flanagan's best flick Ouija: The Origins of Evil. it's one of very few modern mainstream horrors that will totally rock your socks off.

Super underrated gangsta flick. If Denzel wasn't nominated (I forget) then he damn well better of been at the very least. Russell Crowe pulls his weight throughout as well. More importantly it's Ridley Scott's best film in the last 10 years and certainly his best since Gladiator amiritefellas?
