As psychological thrillers go it's a 9/10. Jebus, talk about a character arc. Jason Batemen's best work to date. He was seriously great in this.

Spoiler for Spoiler:
Even though you end up kinda hating his guts by the end.

I re-watched this recently as well. I loved it. Yes, it fell into some of the typical tropes of a thriller but the reveal is so worth it.

My personal favourite of the Ong Bak trilogy

NNever understood why the baby feeding scene in Eraserhead is unanimously hailed as one of the most disturbing things ever
Spoiler for spoil:
the scene where he cuts it open is way more chilling and gnarly

Spoiler for .:
I think that might be because the feeding scene is earlier in the movie and as a result is a more of a shock. At the point where he cuts it open you're already full swing into the disturbing weirdness.

this is decent but I'm probably not gonna call it a favorite. Too much cliche corniness and not enough gripping surreal horror. Good imagery in some sequences.

Definitely a bit dated these days, but pretty mind blowing over 25 years ago. Same goes for the flick Altered States with William Hurt. Worth checking out MB.

The Fly is my favorite

Pretty much my thoughts on the film. I did like it much more after a second viewing though.

Altered States is fantastic! Much prefer that one to Jacob's Ladder.

By far his best film, cause I've never really thought he was that good of an actor but he was the best choice for this film.

debaserr 04-16-2017 12:33 AM

I've liked him since Girls.

What would you all respectably say is the scariest movie you've ever seen

I was a kid at the time, but the original Halloween scared me shirtless (you know, when you're so scared that you strip down naked).

These days I would probably say The Shining because of how disconcerting it is and it feels like you're going insane. The Strangers was visceral and frightening on a rea world level. The Nightmare was also scary in that way. TBH though I think I'm desensitized to scary things in film.

There were movies that made me nervous as a kid, even scared me, but the only one that ever truly terrified me and made me turn it off was The Howling 4. No idea if it was actually a good movie, but that body melting scene freaked me the mother**** out and made me hide under my covers. Now of course it is cheesy (though still pretty ****ing gnarly), but since movies no longer scare me except for jump scares for the most part, I'll give it to the movie that actually worked at one point.

It was originally titled Black Christmas. Been renamed a couple of times since.

Pre-dated, and HEAVILY influenced both Halloween and Friday the 13th.

Mondo Bungle 04-16-2017 08:24 PM

Body horror is just so great, It's original in its different horror aspects. As well as being intensified by the fact that it's a human body which your are familiar with. It almost doubles the scare factor since you see gnarly stuff that could also be goin down in your body.

Yeah, when done right and not with ****ty CGI, werewolf transformation scenes are pretty ****ing sick.

?

really?

i watched that recently and while some of enactments were decent it was overall a pretty ****ing lame film despite the fact it was dealing with one of the scariest conditions in existence.

Mondo Bungle 04-16-2017 08:42 PM

I feel like body horror gets you freaking out on a subconscious level.

Transformation scenes via The Fly and the Thing though.

I thought it was really gripping and creepy (especially the parts with the mom and the cat). Could have been that i wasn't used to the documentary approach to horror, but I really did love that movie.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 04-16-2017 08:48 PM

two classic films right there yeah

i'm not sure about scariest tbf but the shining is definitely up there. i will say antichrist really ****ed me up the first time i saw it, but that was more disturbing than scary.

huh, weird. i came away with an entirely different opinion on it.

Mondo Bungle 04-16-2017 08:50 PM

one of those horror movie people is growing in me

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 04-16-2017 08:56 PM

i checked my imdb ratings just to see and the only horror movies ive rated 10/10 are

the shining
the fly
rosemary's baby
antichrist

you should try starry eyes or repulsion mondo, if you haven't seen either of them. they're two entirely different movies but i feel like you might enjoy them i dunno

So two types of movies scare me the most, home invasion movies where they just end up killing people because they can with no other motivation. So The Strangers is up there with Funny Games and Hush.

My christian upbringing when I was younger has lead me to be scared ****less by demonic possession type movies.

The movie that combined so many of adult's fears into one movie is the most scary to me though.

The Conjuring. They covered demonic possession, creepy dolls, creepy kids, clowns and there were a few other fears but can't recall it atm.

The Conjuring wins for me.
