Dumb me. Never knew the TV show was based on an actual movie.

*goes searching on Netflix*

I watched it with a film production friend who is buds with Joshua David (Creative Technologist for FUNimation) and several other members of their key staff in the West. He educated me as to all the major developments in anime distribution and dubbing in the last ten years, particularly the changes following FUNimation's merge with Crunchyroll and the vast improvements in redubbing for English distribution.

Of course, I adored the hard sci-fi storyline and the philosophical questions of the GitS universe. (Anything akin to Philip K Dick is entirely up my alley.) I'll definitely be taking in the series next.

Dude, nice. Yeah, anime dubs used to be the pits. I'm generally a sub man, and a lot of it is because of just how bad dubs used to be, but they're way better now than they used to be. I still generally watch subs just cause Japanese voice actors are still better, but the divide is getting slim enough that I can usually do one or the other and be fine. The American talent pool is also smaller, so you often end up hearing the same voice actors in anime after anime, which can be a tad distracting.

If you need any recs then I got you. I've been on an anime binge myself recently so I've got it on the mind. If you haven't seen Cowboy Bebop already then I'd definitely suggest that next, and it's got a dub that is often considered even better than the Japanese version. And if you're interested in something with bizarro sci-fi, nihilistically dark psychological themes, Waking Life-esque scenes of existential bizarreness, demented religious iconography, all tied up into an anime that deconstructs shounen and giant robot anime, then Neon Genesis Evangelion is quite possibly the most essential anime ever made.

I've not! Promptly added to my old-timey watch list! Thanks :)

The Ghost & Mrs. Muir, you mean? (It WAS on netflix but they cruelly removed it recently.) I'll see if I can find a decent-quality stream) Was the show actually any good? I'm so emotionally invested and obsessed with the movie that I've always refused to see the TV adaptation.

I had missed it - thanks for re-sharing. And as for Eva, you had me at, "bizarro sci-fi, nihilistically dark psychological themes, Waking Life-esque scenes of existential bizarreness and demented religious iconography."

Paprika is a good one too, so I've heard.

Well, that's reassuring. I'll need just one more person to have a proper fanclub.

One of those that I keep meaning to watch. The animation looks insane.

Hey, moms have good taste! They can appreciate dreamy sea captain ghosts, at the very least:

La LA Land twice

Still in love

The Batlord 02-11-2017 06:40 PM

What will you do when La La Land leaves theaters?

One of my favorite films. I love it, my daughter loves it, and my mom loved it to such a degree that I was given the middle name Lucia. Don't even get me started on Sexy Rexy. "What we missed, Lucia. What we both missed." I think Joseph L. Mankiewicz was an underrated producer and very intelligent screenwriter.

djchameleon 02-11-2017 08:33 PM

I went to see Split yesterday and it was so good. I love the twist at the end and I'm glad that I didn't pay attention to the naysayers that said that it falls apart near the end.

Also I feel like it did a respectful job of dealing with DID it wasn't as exploitative as some people were worried about only based off of the trailer. If they actually watch the movie instead of complaining based off of a trailer they will see that it was handled with respect to the disorder.

I'm assuming "some people" are whiny bitches of the Tumblr variety?

Basically!

Also the M. Night twist at the end is so worth it.

YES! Finally.

You're lucky! I'm actually legitimately planning on adopting Lucia as my middle name once I finally get around to legally changing my name.

Is is terribly underrated in general-- it has such a comforting, almost magical quality to it. I love all of the simmering, barely-repressed longing beneath Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison's prim and proper demeanor. Plus, it's endlessly re-watchable, and that monologue absolutely ruins me single time. (I also confess that I have watched every single cheesy Youtube musical tribute video) "It's been a dream, Lucia..."

could not agree more....when the "beast" twist happened i totally gave up on the film but that very end scene was perfect and set up for what can be some great films to come

I'm so happy to hear it did well. I've not seen it yet, but I was really pushing for M. Night to finally get out of his funk.

The Batlord 02-12-2017 11:20 AM

I'm perfectly happy to go see it just for James McAvoy. I don't think I'll be breaking down any doors to see it, but me and a buddy go see movies a lot so I might just go see this as the chain theaters around here are kind of light on anything else good to watch.

Key 02-12-2017 11:32 AM

James McAvoy has certainly gone up in my favorite actors list as well.

bob. 02-12-2017 12:04 PM

Guess what!?

It's my ****ing birthday and I'm going to go see LA LA Land!!!!

I haven't bothered. bob. just has a problem.

The Batlord 02-12-2017 12:39 PM

I actually tried convincing my friend to see it with me the other day, but he's a schmuck, so I'll probably end up pirating it at some point.

Chiomara 02-12-2017 01:05 PM

We should all go see La La Land alone (with a flask of tequila) for valentine's day! That would be a good and healthy life choice.

I'd rather get drunk off the beer in my fridge and pretend I don't know any of you.

Actually, if Moonlight is still in theaters I think I'll just go see that instead.

Key 02-12-2017 01:30 PM

My ex girlfriend and I share an anniversary on Valentines Day. I'd rather not celebrate the fact that she cheated on me with someone that deals heroin and made her homeless.

Why not celebrate the fact that you love yourself. Self love is important. I bought my girl some stuff but I am also buying myself a huge bear and some chocolate.

Yes to Moonlight or Fences if you can find it. You have to see La La Land at least once in the theater thouugh. It is a very nice theater experience.

bob. 02-12-2017 03:55 PM

Moonlight and Lion are amazing valentine films but la la land is perfect. I just walked out and I'm going again. The Manger of my local theater will not charge me anymore :-)

Stumbled across A Hard Day's Night (1964) recently. Good lord, it was mind blowing to be reminded just how incredibly talented The Beatles were in every freaking regard.
