Serenity. What a fun flick. So many great quotes. Just from River alone:

"I swallowed a bug."
"I do, but I like to hear you say it."
"Put a bullet to me. Bullet in the brain pan. Squish."
"They want us alive when they eat us."
"You take care of me, Simon. You've always taken care of me. My turn."

Escape From Alcatraz

Happened across a documentary about the 1962 escape by 3 prisoners from Alcatraz island. Went into a bunch of killer detail about it all. Re-watched the Clint Eastwood flick and sure enough, they nailed just about everything.

Really cool to see Fred Ward (Tremors) and Larry Hankin (Breaking Bad Old Joe) so young.

Time Lapse
it's on Netflix
was actually rather good

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 10-24-2016 09:06 PM

Saw the new Oulja movie today. Went into expecting it to blow, even with it's critical acclaim, but boy was I wrong. There are some nods to The Exorcist, Poltergeist, and a bunch of other classic horror movies that I probably just didn't pick up on my first viewing.

Frown, or anyone else who enjoys a well made horror film, check this out asap. It has great atmosphere and properly utilized jump scares that still have me frightened about an hour after leaving the theatre.

Frownland 10-24-2016 09:14 PM

I wasn't too excited until I saw the trailer for it where the girl has the sealed mouth and that really made me interested. Thanks for the rec, I'll go find a torrent sometime soon.

Great movie for a fanboy, or a fan of Firefly. I saw it like 4 times and enjoyed it a lot.

Having said that, try watching it with someone who doesn't know the tv show - they will be confused as f*ck. seriously, if you know the context it all works, if you don't - it's gibberish. Makes me sad as I know several people that saw it and it only reinforced their "sf is stupid and confusing" view..

I've never seen the show but liked the movie. Nothing confusing about it either.

Same here. When I first saw the movie I didn't even know there had been a TV show. Couldn't get tired last night so re-watched a couple of flicks.

The Perfect Host - Messed up black comedy with David Hyde Pierce from Frazer fame playing a really dark and screwed up character. Brilliant but completely off his rocker.

Equilibrium - Kind of cliched dystopian tale that has just enough originality to keep it interesting. Christian Bale is more of a bad ass in this than American Psycho and all of the Batman movies combined.

I saw the movie about a day after a friend showed me only a few episodes. Obviously that helped, but I was still largely introduced to the show through the movie... unless he showed me like five or six episodes, which would be about half the series, but I don't really remember. But at least I got to see it in theaters.

Same here - the plot was pretty clear without any prior knowledge. Having seen tons of sci-fi in general may have helped.

Yac 10-26-2016 12:45 AM

That's actually refreshing. I had multiple people that I recommended the movie to complain they found it confusing. They never saw the tv series. Good to know these people are morons :D

I literally returned to the forum because I just recently saw the Darjeeling Limited and suddenly Wes Anderson made complete sense, but I don't have anybody to talk to about his films.

Someone please indulge me. :(

I like The Life Aquatic but I'm really lazy and haven't watched any others yet :P

Life Aquatic and the Fantastic Mr. Fox are the only two I have not yet seen, so it seems we're at an impasse.

But seriously in the last three days I've seen the Royal Tenenbaums, Grand Budapest Hotel, and Darjeeling Limited (viewed twice, read the script once), and I need an outlet for my admiration.

I've only seen The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Royal Tenenbaums.
Both fun and entertaining.
Oh and Fantastic Mr. Fox, which might be an unusual one for him, which wasn't bad either.

Loved Grand Budapest. Unexpectedly funny and terribly charming. I felt like Grand Budapest was quite a thematic departure (granted, not a stylistic one) for him though--it certainly had the most apparent plotline, the most dialogue, and the least moodiness of his films so far.

See, I saw Moonrise Kingdom a couple of years ago and it really didn't do much for me, however, in light of my recent Wes Anderson enlightenment phase, I will probably go at it again.

I was on the fence about Rushmore too, but I liked Tenenbaums, so as a director I found him hit-or-miss until seeing Darjeeling on the plane like four days ago on my way back from my own escapist flight of fancy. Maybe that's why it hit me so hard, although I do not recall thinking that at the time.

Lol that was my introduction to Wes in the first place. I had never heard of him, and then one day Olivia sent me a text saying like "Don't you think Wes Anderson is the most pretentious director of all time?"

Then, I looked up a list of his films and realized that Life Aquatic had been in my queue anyways and watched it the next day. Oh, and then a couple days latwr I made her watch 2001.

Definitely give it another go if you get the chance, it's probably my favourite of his!

Why does she hate things just because she doesn't understand them? :(

Wes Anderson is to pretentious movies what Slipknot is to extreme metal.

I hated Mulholland Drive because I didn't immediately follow it. I experience confusion as a physical sensation, and if I can't quickly resolve it, it gives way to a feeling of frustrated stupidity. Which I find hateful and painful.

As a result, me and David Lynch films are not good friends. I'm not saying it's right, but I get it.

Also just recently saw Alien and the 3rd Star Trek for the first time.

Alien was great. Even decades of pop culture references couldn't ruin the feel of it after all this time. 3rd Star Trek was a washout.

Heaven Can Wait. (1978 version)

Always been a fave. Was nominated for 9 Academy Awards. Excellent cast and a killer premise. Very funny but also very moving at times. Dated? Yes. But the story is timeless. Great date movie too.

Frownland 10-28-2016 08:30 PM

Dated how? Like acting? I can get past that.

Nah, the acting is top notch. What's really cool is that Beatty and Christie were an item at the time so the chemistry is really natural. Kinda like Pitt and Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Technically speaking and the overall look of the movie is a bit dated.

Oh, and Dyan Cannon in her prime is well worth the price of admission.

Good, though.

She mostly watches B horror movies. And she's way into labelling things as pretentious quickly. Really gets on my nerves but it's whatever.

This Ouija movie shouldn't even be compared to the first one or be related to it. I understand why they didn't name it Ouija 2. The acting was pretty great and at times I was a little upset about the acting being so good for a horror movie that I wanted to just pass off as another typical jump scare movie. I liked all the nods to other horror movies along with tackling a few horror movie tropes. I loved the part when

I feel like Darjeeling Limited was my proper introduction to Wes Anderson. I did see The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic when I was younger but I just passed them off as pretty boring movies and I felt like I didn't quite get the charm and appeal of his movies. Darjeeling changed all of that though, I should go back and watch those two other movies now that I have a greater appreciation for his work. I haven't seen any of his other movies so I need to get on that.

OOooo, I love David Lynch films. I feel like I don't even have to understand them to love it. I don't have to follow what's going on. The more random I think something is the better. Also something that may appear to be random ends up being meaningful but I usually don't completely understand until I read analysis pieces from other people online.

I had to watch Interstellar twice before the waterfalls started. The first time I watched it was a bit confusing because I was just like half ass watching it in the background while at my desk.

Yup, I agree. When I heard the new Oulja was supposed to be good I couldn't help but question that. Probably the 2nd best horror movie I've seen this year, 2nd to The Witch obv. The director has slowly been making a pretty good name for himself, he did Hush and Oculus as well. Even though I'm not as big on the movies as others tend to be, they're definitely pretty good for mainstream (well, at least Oculus) horror movies.
