It's interesting to me how different movies from around that time can feel. Spartacus (1960) feels way more modern to me, while some other movies from back then really do feel very old to my modern sensibilities. I'd like to watch The Fly if it isn't as b-movie/Twilight Zone like as I imagine it to be.

I wouldn't say those are the words to describe either.

Just finished watching My Dinner With Andre. Pretty interesting movie. It's a cliché; but it really makes you think.

Also, in the context of the movie, watching the end credits and listening to that music was somehow quite a special thing.

Go to around 4:20

Just watched ADJUST YOUR TRACKING: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector produced by VH****fest in association with Horror Boobs / Lunchmeat.

The film really did a great job of showcasing the archeologists of low-brow VHS culture. Produced with a smaller Kickstarter budget than the other major VHS culture film, REWIND THIS!, Tracking interviews key collectors like the owners of Video Fiend, Spectacle Theater, Massacre Video, the writers and editors from Destroy All Movies!!!, Fangoria, Horror Hound's Video Invasion series, Everything is Terrible, Lunchmeat magazine, and Lloyd Kaufman of Troma.

If you love classics like Blood Sucking Freaks, Psychos in Love, Return of the Alien's Deadly Spawn, and I Spit on Your Grave, or crave direct-to-video features showcasing apartment rental properties and work out instructional tapes, then don't miss this crazy flick.

And if you're looking for your fellow lunatic 30-something basement-dewlling crustpunk brethren, they have a thriving FB community called The Horror VHS Collectors Unite FB page.

Definitely near the top of my watch list. Tomorrow's film is Dark Days. I'm also picking up an external HDD w several thousand hours of tokusatsu. I'm long overdue to watch the classic Godzilla films.

MicShazam 09-05-2016 03:52 PM

I binged on old Godzilla movies once. They are more different from eachother than I had expected. The original is probably still the best (the Japanese version, of course).

OMG I loved old Godzilla movies growing up. I still remember watching Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and it being awesome. And King Kong vs Godzilla. Those movies were the best.

MicShazam 09-05-2016 04:04 PM

I liked the first one with Mothra. It was strangely beautiful at times. On the other hand, the worst part of any Godzilla movie is always the part where boring old military officers waffle on for minutes on end. Giant radioactive monsters punch eachother in the face while humans flee in panic. This doesn't really need to be explained so meticulously.

There's something about watching Godzilla movies late at night when you're barely able to keep awake. Falling asleep to monster lazer beam battles is very calming, somehow. I gotta do that again some day.

Chula Vista 09-05-2016 04:10 PM

You monster freaks remember this one?

Spoiler for Spoiler:
The chick in the airport lounge sings the song "The Words get Stuck in my Throat". And then she gets swallowed. Pee your pants funny.

Saw Civil war yesterday and f*ckin loved it and then I saw the first hour of batman vs superman and bailed. How is it that marvel can put a ton a superheroes in their movie and make it work but DC can't make a decent movie out of their 2 most popular heroes?

I watched civil war and didn't question anything but when I watched Batman vs superman I thought " that bath scene seemed unnecessary and why is lex luthor acting like a psycho Willy wonka?" I'm gonna finish the movie today and hope it gets better but that first hour alone was filled with questionable character choices.

You made the right choice with BvS.

Black Francis 09-07-2016 11:56 AM

Did you see the killing joke Batlord? I'm planning on watching that one today too. I saw that animated DC flick where batman's plan took out the whole justice league and that was way better than BvS, I didn't bail on that movie in the first hour.

Ive shoulda watched BvS before Civil war cause civil war set the bar too high.

I have not seen it yet. I will when I have enough room on my comp for a 1080p torrent. And I haven't seen the Tower of Babel movie (the original comic with Batman's plans. I don't remember it existing TBH.

Black Francis 09-07-2016 01:19 PM

The movie is called Justice league: Doom and it's really good. Most of the DC animated movies I've seen have actually been pretty great unlike their live action movies, they're usually structured better and have a better pace and animated wise it feels like they created a solid template that makes all their animated films work. If they find a way to do that in their live action flicks they could consistently crank out better DC films

I believe I have that on my computer, as I do a number of other DC animated movies. You should check out Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. The end makes me legit cry every time I watch it. Assault on Arkham is also a better Suicide Squad movie than the live action one. And don't even tell me if you haven't seen Mask of the Phantasm.

Who hasn't seen Mask of the Phantasm?

Also I hope he doesn't even tell you.

That's so dumb. Only watching the first hour of BvS and then stopping it. You miss out on the fun fight scene at the end. What you should have done was fast forward to the climax fight scene and watch from there to the end.

I saw the killing joke and it is so good. Let me know what you think about it. It does have its issues but talk to me about it after you watch it and let me know what you think.

My only regret is not seeing it in theaters. Oh, and you all need Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker in your lives. Since it's a movie and not a TV episode that had to pass TV censors it's probably the most raw, ****ed up portrayal of the Joker by Mark Hamill.

At least until The Killing Joke (I assume).

Black Francis 09-07-2016 02:22 PM

I've seen mask of phantasm but I haven't seen the other two you mentioned yet. I was thinking of watching age of apocalypse too but idk, there's something a bit off putting about the character designs. Psylocke looks hot tho but not as hot as the animated one.

@dj

That's not how it works! Civil war was entertaining even when they weren't fighting. It can't be just all about the big CGI fights. Plus, I already know that whoever is equipped with kryptonite against Superman is likely gonna beat him. I'm still gonna finish it tho, if anything Im looking forward to see how many face palms it will get outta me.

I'll share my take on the killing joke too. I'm already expecting it to better than BvS.

Age of Apocalypse ****ing sucked. It was so boring and continued in the long line of introducing beloved characters in inappropriate bit roles. Psylocke is just kind of there and doesn't do much of anything to justify her existence. AoA is pretty much the X3 of the prequel movies.

I'm not talking about standing up for the movie as a whole entity. I'm telling you the fun part is just the big CGI fights and that's all there is to BvS. The build up in that movie is lame where as the build up to the airport scene in Civil War was entertaining along the way. Just watch the fight , it isn't about knowing how it will turn out. It is about actually seeing the fight happen. Just chillax and enjoy a good fight scene alright? take the movie reviewer stick out of your proverbial butt and just enjoy yourself with a superhero fight instead of expecting cinematic gold.

The fight isn't even that great. I mean seeing Wonder Woman was awesome but other than that the fight was totally forgettable.

No, I like the stick up there. It hits my G spot just right. I don't watch any superhero movie expecting cinematic gold btw but I don't like awful scenes that ruin my immersion on a movie and BvS has those pretty early on.

Also like I said, I went from Civil war to BvS so I can't help to compare the experience I got from each movie because the difference in quality in them was very apparent.

I've been wanting to see this for so long. Unless I buy it on Amazon, I'll never be able to watch it.

Edit: actually not true, I can download it through Piratebay.

Nah screw you the fight was great. It was good to finally see them going at it and then the Wonder Woman intro was worth the price of admission alone. Downplay it all you want but the fight was awesome.

Spoiler for Major Spoilers - Kinda:
Up until the first flashback you're intrigued with where the hell it's going. You know there's something off with the lead (and I was already leaning to his sexuality) but them BAM! it becomes crystal clear. From that point on the flick is spellbinding. About halfway through things start coming into focus and then the last 30 minutes is the full reveal. One of the most heartbreaking finales I've seen in a long while.

Matthias Schoenaerts is incredible throughout. If you are a fan of DeNiro in his prime, and Thomas Hardy's darker stuff you need to check this out. It's doesn't get any better. Same goes for the technical aspects, especially the cinematography.

There were a lot of times where the atmosphere (not the plot) reminded me of both Exotica and The Secret in Their Eyes.

Great flick Mr. F. Thanks for the head's up!

It's really a genius perspective on masculinity. That ending elevator scene is one of the greatest things shot on camera.
