As for the film, 'twas good fun. Great stunts and action sequences, interesting plot to make them work, wonderful costumes for the aliens, didn't go over the top with the CG etc. I watched this afterwards which was a bit more profound though... http://i26.tinypic.com/amps0w.jpg ^ A documentary fronted by Herzog himself about his fairly temperamental relationship with his frequent collaborator Klaus Kinski. Fascinating stuff. |

^ Interesting film on a thematic level that made me chuckle occasionally. Johansson looked fine as always, along with Tokyo looking nicer than its usual portrayals. Never would have pegged Murray as someone who'd actually look fitting on a whiskey billboard ad though. |
I specifically bought the Japanese DVD release of Kill Bill Vol 1 a few years back (cost me £25) as the House of Blue Leaves sequence is in full colour and the anime sequence is longer and I watched it this afternoon for the first time in a few years and enjoyed it immensely. The only thing that (still) annoys me is the use of previous soundtrack songs. I know the guy loves movies but he should have stuck with conventional tracks that would strike more of a chord instead of me thinking about the movies and TV shows he stole from (Green Hornet/Twisted Nerve etc). Saying that 'Battle Without Honor Or Humanity' is still a great use of music.
I have only seen volume 2 once and felt let down so I don't own it anymore, however I wanted to see it straight away after watching this. |
Oh I downloaded the Jap editions. Haven't watched them yet, but I do plan to make a night out of it soon. Love that man. (:
I watched a bunch of films since I last tabbed but I cannae be bovvered to list them all so I'll just list the last one which is State and Main by David Mamet. I got a lot of flack for saying I loved Redbelt but I still say it's one of his best films. Especially when you compare it with a lackluster (yay I finally used it in a sentence) film like State and Main. It's one of those films with a big cast that no one knows about because it (deservedly) tanked (or so I assume, I guess Mamet never really made blockbusters). Anyhoo, this one was yet another film about the making of a film and reminded me somewhat of an Altman film (and I'm not a fan, sorry). In short, uneventful and forgettable. 5/10 |
I want to catch Red Belt, looks really good. House Of Games is another Mamet classic.

Watched "Role Models" tonight for some reason.
Is was just another one of those mediocre movies. |
I thought I'd check out some non-demanding mainstream American films from '09 over the weekend. First up was The Hangover which was surprisingly entertaining, despite the fact that it was obviously made for American-hetero-assholes (sorry guys but there really is a distinct class of people which is bread in American colleges and I'm pretty sure it doesn't thrive in any other environment). It's like their perfect fantasy of a bachelor party, and it has all the ingredients for drunken retelling by these very same assholes: there's an uberbutch heteroasshole role model, a nerdy doormat which comes to his senses, the perfectly upstanding dude and the weirdo for the "ha-ha and then that weirdo did this!" moments. So, even though I wanted to shove my fist in every one of their assholes, it was a surprisingly entertaining 90 or so minutes. I can totally see why it became such a monster at the boxoffice.
If any of that came off as offensive, well...though shit. Oh and then I watched 27 dresses with my niece (I know, I'm the greatest uncle ever for putting myself through that but it's really tough to pick a fun film for a 13 year old girl). Anyways, it was really bad and predictable and not the least bit entertaining, but I think she had fun so hey... |

Cute little movie with some truly amazing acting from the children and a heart warming ending. |
