Truly blown away by The Revenant. I don't know if I've been so 'locked-in' to a flim before - couldn't look away once.
|
This doesn't really belong here, or anywhere else, but I'm putting it here.
Over the last few nights I've been listening to: The Hobbit read by Nicol Williamson Fantastic. Puts the movies to shame. |
You people voted for Hubert Humphrey, and you killed Jesus!
|
Glengarry Glen Ross. Such a classic. Toss a handful of A-list actors into a closed environment and just have them act the **** out of every line.
Alec Baldwin's finest moment. |

La Jetee Goddamn. I knew 12 Monkeys (which I'm a huge fan of) was based off of this going into it but this is really something else. |

Beasts of No Nation Bloody fantastic. Except for maybe Leo's performance (maybe), this was hands down better than The Revenant. The first act that shows manipulative leader bring the protagonist out of boyhood and turn him into a warrior was amazingly executed. An easy 5/5. |
Beasts of No Nation is a film that I've been meaning to watch but the plot doesn't interest me all that much. From what I've heard it's great though, and I'll have to get around to seeing it sooner than later.

Two monumental films today:
The first was the 16-minute animated short film Lucky Day Forever, a dystopian Matrix-meets-Brazil-meets-They Live with a dash of Neo-Tokyo. It's won a flood of awards since its release but I've only just now seen it for the first time. And tonight I'm finishing James Cameron's 1995 box office bomb, Strange Days. A financial failure but a criminally underrated dystopian sci fi flick. |

Has anyone seen this lately? Is it just me or does it feel sort of dated, and not in the best of ways? Acting's a bit stiff in certain parts, a little too much Shakey cam, sort of feels like I'm watching a lifetime movie during a few dialogue scenes. Best picture should've gone to Inglorious Basterds. That being said, it's fantastic. And Kathryn Bigelow went on to make one of the best films of this century after. |

Re-watched Bridesmaids tonight. Such a funny and ultimately charming little movie. The wedding dress shop scene is gut splittingly funny. |

Very Abstract, multiple plot point, mildly difficult to follow, interesting connections, great acting and beautiful visuals. Everything from Comedy, to action, to philosophy. 9/10 |

Just finished watching Everest which is based on the 1996 disastrous climb. A little slow in the beginning and they pour the melodrama on a little too thick at times but all in all a crazy and gut wrenching flick. Amazing cinematography too.

Tom Hardy is brilliant but this was a massive let down. Historically inaccurate, lacking in suspense, lacking in originality and clunky at best. http://img.ozgameshop.com/dvd_and_bl...ly_dvd_raw.jpg One woman takes revenge against her captors that is both exhilarating and borderline plagiarism. One of the end shots is a like for like copy of Luc Bessons Leon and the director (judging by the interview on the extras) wants to be Tarantino and tonally it's very uneven. It's both comedic and harrowing and unsure whether it wants to be cool or exploitative. However it is a blast and great fun if you suspend disbelief. Plus points are the handling of the mother daughter scenes and the (almost) one location setting. http://s3.discshop.fi/img/front_larg.../coherence.jpg One of those no budget Sci-Fi mind benders similar to Primer or Another Earth whereby the dialogue and situations matter far more than using FX. A comet passing above the earth (barely glimpsed) causes alternate realities for a dinner party in suburbia with 4 couples. Almost all of the film is set within one house but the film builds like a jigsaw puzzle with no actual picture at the end. Impressive. |

Inception. Such an amazing movie.

The Verdict They just don't make them like this anymore. Newman was robbed of the Oscar in 82. |

Anyway, http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...640_SY720_.jpg Did you know Mark Hamill auditioned for the lead role? The filmmakers said they didn't want Luke Skywalker in the movie. That's not the first time that's happened. I told them Luke Skywalker damaged Mark Hamill's career potential, but nobody listened, He could've been Mozart on film. No. He just got the play. I want to see him play Mozart in a movie. Ah, he's a fantastic Joker. And Skips. Enough about that. Amadeus was a brilliant look on a man's path to insanity, driven by nothing but self-righteousness. At least, that's what I got from it. |

That's pretty much my expression when someone says Michael "Cane". And yes, I am able to hear the wrong spelling.

2001: A Space Odyssey
I don't ordinarily care much for sci-fis but never tire of watching this. Great visuals. Great music. Great movie. |
I agree it was quite the experience. The ending was a little drowned out, and the humans needed more character development. If it just worked on those a little, it would nothing short of perfection. I mean, the humans seemed like the real robots.
Still, it showed some amazing new techniques for filmmaking. Almost as good as The Godfather. |

Lost in Translation
I don't watch many films, but I'm surprised this never really caught my attention until a few days ago. Utterly stunning visually, charming dialogue, Bill f*cking Murray, Scarlett f*cking Johansson (that opening shot), beautiful music and an all round fantastic film. Loved it. |

I thought it had great potential, they managed to show the sun in all its awe inspiring glory, but the stupidity of the premise and the fact that the movie deteriorated Spoiler for Spoiler:
towards the end pretty much killed it for me. |

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks do it again, this time in the shape of a brilliant spy tale and period piece. The commie who plays Abel I must admit deserves an Oscar for supporting actor, not sure if he's nominated and I'm too lazy to look. Tom Hanks does a serviceable job, naturally. Spielberg hasn't felt so Spielberg-ian in a long time, it's wonderful. 3.5/5 http://www.bytowne.ca/files/bytowne/...poster_285.jpg Anomalisa kinda floored me. At first I thought that the world this man lives in is full of only men and trans-women, but it gets much more absurd than that. Very lovely, this film. Don't mistake this as typical animated PG fodder, cause mature it very much is. 4.5/5 http://i.imgur.com/VSuHo9Y.jpg?1 I always appreciate a film where investigative journalists go through the arduous process of coming to a conclusion. Unfolding such systemic corruption at a pace that isn't too far off from actual journalists. Sounds boring but I was sucked in the entire time. And the ending, holy cow I held back tears. 4/5 http://7e2d047e71fba1e39904-7b5b7a49...ort-poster.jpg No matter what you know about the credit default swap market, or subprime loans that are impossible to pay, or whether hedge-fund managers gobbledygooked the collateralized debt obligations, it's still pretty fucking entertaining. 4/5 http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads...stSFumiZgl.jpg Best Picture 5/5 |

THX 1138 (2004 Director's Cut). Had a copy for years but never made the time to watch it.
I'm picking up a Laserdisc rip of the original version as well. |
