Watched Source Code for the second time last night. Brilliant film. Totally mind blowing.

Ashwell John 11-14-2015 05:52 PM

Last night watched "All is Well" enjoyed a lot while watching.

Feels like some kind of third rate sitcom remake of 'The Exterminating Angel'.
Which is too bad, since the premise is still cool and it could have been a fun movie if it had intelligent writing and good actors.

Chula Vista 11-15-2015 08:58 AM

It's certainly not Oscar worthy, but it fits your definition.

It does, but that kind of movie only works with very good actors and well-written dialogue.
But thanks anyway for the tip. There's also still a chance that the last 20 minutes are going to make me like it.

EDIT: Finished watching it. Today I found it much more enjoyable. Go figure.

Watched The Last Waltz fairwell concert by The Band, directed by Martin Scorsese. Hadn't seen the whole thing before. Really good.

:D

'Roxy & Elsewhere' is possibly my favourite album of his and I pretty much know every note and every word. It's totally surreal to finally see it all with my own eyes. Also interesting to fully notice how much Zappa eventually changed live albums by cutting, splicing and overdubbing.
The video and sound quality are amazing and I love how there are no annoying special effects and the camera isn't all jerky, showing long, clear shots of the musicians. A must-see for everyone who likes Zappa.

The Batlord 11-17-2015 06:23 PM

I've heard he never plays the same solo twice in concert.

Frownland 11-17-2015 06:24 PM

Would you want to hear a guitar solo two times in a row?

DeadChannel 11-17-2015 10:47 PM

I watched His Name Was King. An okay example of the spaghetti western. Nothing special. Sort of deceitful in that Klaus Kinski was hardly in the movie. Great soundtrack though.

5/10

I just watched that for the first time, last week, and enjoyed it very much. Even more so than the live footage from 1974 (which is also excellent in quality and performance) on 'The Dub Room Special' video. Definitely a must-see for Zappa/Mothers fans.

The Dub Room Special is pretty awesome as well, but I don't like it, when concert footage is mixed with animation, interviews etc.
I want to be as close as possible to the live experience and Roxy is ****ing amazing in that respect.

Mr. Charlie 11-19-2015 09:36 AM

Witchfinder General

Watched this a few nights back. Not a perfect movie by any means - the supporting actors don't always cut the mustard and the costumes look... well, like costumes; but the underlying theme involving power, violence, corruption and mass deception is as relevant as ever. Really good film overall.

Chula Vista 11-19-2015 09:47 AM

Reminds me of The Mark of the Devil.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_of_the_Devil

They really did hand out a small paper puke bag when you bought your ticket.

Absolutely brutal scenes of torture. Google image the movie title.

Frownland 11-19-2015 09:49 AM

^You ought to check out Martyrs.

The google images are pretty grizzly.

Is the violence difficult to watch?

DeadChannel 11-19-2015 10:12 AM

Watched I Saw the Devil last night. Excellent Korean revenge thriller. I liked it a little more than Oldboy, actually, although it's similar. Typical of Korean genre cinema, very bloody and brutal at points, but it runs on a tense script and takes risks that its Hollywood counterparts wouldn't dare. I give it an 8/10.

Definitely. Especially since most of it is against women. And the scenes are drawn out enough to make you really squirm.

Crazy movie. Loads of suspense, especially during the third act.

Have you seen The Man from Nowhere? Maybe my favorite SK movie in that genre.

DeadChannel 11-19-2015 11:58 AM

What a coincidence, I had The Man From Nowhere qued up for tonight. Been pretty big on Korean stuff lately. I'll post my thoughts.

Internal Affairs is another really good one. The Departed is a remake of it and Scorcese stayed pretty faithful to IA in a lot of areas.

I'll check that out. So far, I've seen Oldboy, The Chaser, Memories of Murder, I Saw The Devil and maybe a few that I'm forgetting. Korean movies are cool.

It's not Korean though.
Have you seen 'A Bittersweet Life'? I think I recced it to you ages ago. Pretty awesome korean revenge thriller. You'll love it.

DeadChannel 11-19-2015 10:25 PM

Sadly, the version of The Man From Nowhere that I have is dubbed in English. **** that. I'll save it for another night. Instead, I watched Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance.

It's surreal, melancholic, gory, beautiful. Brilliant. I've thrown up a longer review on Our Feature Presentation, but it might take a while to go up.

bob. 11-20-2015 07:06 AM

it's been a while since i watched the trilogy but Sympathy for Mr Vengeance has always been my favorite

innerspaceboy 11-21-2015 08:25 PM

Crimson Peak. It was interesting to see del Toro set a horror picture in the framework of a melodrama. I generally don't expect a horror to have great attention paid to set design, lighting, and character development, but del Toro certainly had each in mind. All that said, the film really wasn't my style; but I seldom opt for contemporary cinema.

Also curious whether any of our members have seen either Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) or the cinematic adaptation of Bradbury's The Illustrated Man (1969)?

Both appear to be right up my alley.

I've seen Colossus. Don't remember much, but I'm pretty sure it's a good one.

bob. 11-22-2015 10:15 AM

i base my personal concept of why i get tattoos on the film version of the illustrated man....i love that movie as well as the collection

YorkeDaddy 11-25-2015 10:23 AM

Went and saw Seth Rogen's new movie "The Night Before" because I'm a fanboy that loves stoner comedies where I can shut my mind off for 90 minutes. It did a fine job and entertaining my date and I but it was a little uneven...at points the movie breaks up the three main characters and Rogen's solo sections are WAY more funny than Joseph Gordon-Levitt's or Anthony Mackie's. In fact I wasn't too sold on Mackie's part at all and it was definitely the weak point of the film, his entire character arc was lame as hell.

Overall though it was a good comedy and certain Rogen scenes had me in stitches, definitely recommended if you like his brand of humor.

Chula Vista 11-25-2015 10:45 AM

Finally saw Man of Steel last night. Awesome visuals and special FX but overall not a very good movie.

Also watched Remember the Titans for about the 10th time the other night. Definitely a guilty pleasure flick for me.

grindy 11-25-2015 05:08 PM

I've never really been into comic books, but I thought I might give some animated films of the genre a chance.

Just finished watching Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1.
I liked it a lot.
Next up is part two.
After that my list is (in no particular order):
Batman: Assault On Arkham
Wonder Woman (2009)
Green Lantern: First Flight
Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox
Justice League: War
Justice League: Doom
Superman/Batman: Apocalypse
Hulk Vs.
Justice League: The New Frontier

Any comments and additions from you nerds appreciated.

Frownland 11-25-2015 05:10 PM

Hey, did you know that Christopher Nolan did a few Batman movies?

The guy who did Following? I was wondering what he was up to lately.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman: Under the Red Hood

Both utterly excellent

Forgot to say that I've seen those a few years back after watching the Nolan films. They were indeed great.

Ah, nice

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is also superb but I'd recommend watching at least some of that series first to get a good grip with the characters and setting

Oh and Batman: Sub Zero isn't too shabby either but not quite on the same level as these other three I've brought up

Oh right, I've seen that one as well.
Will check out Sub Zero. Thanks.

The Batlord 11-25-2015 05:48 PM

I'm utterly ashamed to say that of those four I've only seen Return of the Joker. I've got Mask of the Phantasm sitting on my hard drive, but I'm lazy.

Anything with the original cast from Batman: The Animated Series in it is gold, though, and that includes Return of the Joker. ****ing Mark Hamill and Kevin ****ing Conroy.

And you actually call yourself a Batman fan? wtf?

The Batlord 11-25-2015 06:10 PM

I know, man. I even had the chance to see Mask of the Phantasm back when it was in THEATERS, but I just never did. I hate myself.
