Andrei Tarkovsky - Solaris

Dope, but stalker is better.

It's an awesome film, but I think the very last scene
Spoiler for .:
, when the camera pans away from the house, to reveal where it is,
kinda suffers from the SFX available back then. I don't usually care about stuff like that, but since Tarkovsky's movies otherwise all look so awesome and timeless it's more noticeable.

Have you read the book?

Just saw a commercial for a US remake of The Secret inTheir Eyes. ****ing arrogance. The original is brilliant and perfect. Why **** with it?

One of the most amazingly (and seemingly impossible) filmed action scenes ever IMO.

That's pretty amazing. I'll have to check that movie out.

It won the Oscar that year for best foreign language film, deservedly so. Equal parts unfounded love story and murder mystery spanning a quarter of a century. The ending is going to kick you in the head.

HARD.

Inherent Vice (2014)
The style of the movie is right up my alley, but I found it too long and needlessly confusing. It was still an enjoyable experience though.

Listening (2015)
A sci-fi about mind reading. An interesting concept but the acting was sub-par and there were too many holes.

debaserr 11-03-2015 04:37 PM

I liked Inherent Vice too, but I think my 2nd go will be better. I won't expect it to make 100% sense...

Baihe 11-03-2015 06:44 PM

The latest film I have been seeing is Xiao zhen's story.Xiaozhen was a simple, kind Christian who always treated every friend of hers sincerely. However, facing the interests, her old good friends betrayed her and became her enemies. After that bitter experience, Xiaozhen was forced to throw away her true heart and give up her past principles of conducting herself, and began to sell her conscience and soul and wallow in the mire with the world…. She indulged in falling for a long time, and was trampled riddled with scars by the world. Just when she was at a dead end and completely in desperation, Almighty God’s sincere calls finally aroused Xiaozhen’s heart and soul….

You're lucky.
I went to a jewish kindergarden for a few months.

Ip Man and Ip Man 2. Both were pretty great films. Think I enjoyed the second one a little more than first. Hopefully 3rd one will be just as great.

It's actually easier to understand if you pay attention to Joanna Newsom's character narrating the story.

debaserr 11-05-2015 12:45 AM

Newsom's performance made me ill.

I find she tends to have that effect in general.

I didn't even know that was her.

Spectre

while i don't think this was the best out of the Craig Bond films....it certainly delivered....the plot was exciting....small jabs at the mythos of James Bond.....wonderful performances by everyone....overall a great end to Daniel Craig's legacy as this character

Loved the first. Second took things a little too far for my liking, but I still enjoyed it. Had no idea a third is being made. I expect it'll be worse but, ahh, time will tell.

Craig is signed on for one more film which is great because I didn't like this one that much and I honestly love Daniel Craig as Bond. I think he's perfect.

So yeah, didn't like this as much. Skyfall is the pinnacle Bond as far as cinematic achievement goes. This film opens with a gorgeous one take shot in Mexico City that just doesn't get matched during the rest of the two and a half hour run time. Too long for a Bond movie guys. I understand the concept of tension and suspense, but it really seemed like five minutes passed before every sentence that Christoph Waltz said. I thought the ending was anti-climactic and there was almost too much cheese. The Monica Bellucci scene in particular was funny yet also cringy to watch. Yes, I know, it's Bond, but I just couldn't get into it at times.

Still worth the watch and better than Q of S by a longshot, but Skyfall and CR are just leaps and bound better films.

Léa Seydoux though guys. Hubba f*cking hubba.

Chula Vista 11-08-2015 11:33 AM

You guys have seen Layer Cake, right? My fave Craig film by a wide margin.

And Sienna Miller is to die for in it.

bob. 11-08-2015 11:40 AM

Léa Seydoux is near the top of my favorite Bond girl list :)

and i agree it was a bit long and somewhat under whelming

glad to hear that Craig is up for one more

Last night watched "Jamai 420" humorous one.

It was okay. Probably the weakest of the three Daniel Craig bond films.

There were four.
But everyone seems to be hating Quantum...
I didn't even bother to see it because of the reviews.

bob. 11-09-2015 07:34 AM

i would put it just above Quantum

Really? a little bowie and you're sold? that kinda thing doesn't work on me, i remember when fight club used 'Where's my mind' at the end and how that scene gave alot of exposure to the pixies but it didn't impress me at all.

In fact, it kinda puts me off and it gets me thinking about this song

Love that movie and that song. Meg Ryan bathing to Hendrix is the bomb.

I saw the movie but i don't remember any particular scene from it but i do remember that stupid song playing everywhere! the same thing with Armageddon and that awful Aerosmith song.

The Martian was decent. Clearly it's a film designed to capitalize on the success of Gravity and Interstellar, but it's handled well enough for the most part. The big finale and everything after that was a bit laughable, but whatever. Way too long though. Twenty or thirty minutes could have easily been shaved off of it without any major ill effects.

I gained a new appreciation for that song after it started playing just as your character from Saints Row 4 jumps onto an ICBM as it's launching.

Nurse Duckett 11-09-2015 11:07 AM

The Martian; not really my thing, at least that's what i thought until i actually saw it, to be honest, before i saw the movie i didn't realise it was a comedy, i thought it was more sci-fi drivel. Turns out its a very well made modern black comedy, good one liners, funny script and the sound track is hilarious.

The best thing about this movie is that most people don't know they've just watched a comedy, no canned laughter etc. If you're part of the dumbed down its a slightly dodgy sci-fi cliffhanger, if you're not its a decent comedy. If the cap fits wear it.

Black Francis 11-09-2015 11:08 AM

Under those circumstances it wouldn't be so bad.

Would you say is better than Gravity? i haven't seen the Martian but i thought Gravity was pretty good.

debaserr 11-09-2015 07:51 PM

Gravity was a technical marvel (I saw it in theatres). I wouldn't want to see it without 3D though.

Gravity is clearly the better film. At 90 minutes, it's a tightly constructed thriller that, although not perfect, manages to be pretty edge-of-seat riveting throughout. I liked the martian, but it would've been a much better film if some babies were killed in editing.

Carnage

I really like movies happening at just one setting, with a limited cast and lots of dialogue. This one wasn't an exeption. While not always convincing, it's still a fun and clever black comedy with well written dialogue and mostly great acting.

Spectre was not as good as Skyfall or Casino Royale, but probably one of my top ten Bond films. You have to suspnd your disbelief (of course, it's Bond) but there's never a dull moment. Ben Whishaw is outstanding.

Spoiler for plot:
I love how it tied all of Craig's films together, especially the bit when he sees the Vesper interrogation tape in Morocco. I feel there were also salutes to Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service in there too.
