Hooly shieeet.
If kill bill, James Bond and let's say Green Street Hooligans (or any British movie showing the "lower"class") movies got together and had a freak baby, this movie would be that baby.
I wasn't expecting this movie to be this good - I enoyed the full 2 hours of it and just wanted more. Call me ignorant but this just put Matthew Vaughn as a director on my radar..
Anyway, I don't think I could summarize the plot without spoiling anything so I'll use the short summary from IMDB:
A spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program, just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.
And don't get me wrong, this movie is .. silly. Extremely over the top at times. Completely ridiculous. And extremely, extremely funny and entertaining.
Word of warning though: this is not a Hollywood Blockbuster that goes to great lengths to make the movie available to the widest possible range of audiences, for example by limiting violence. Oh no. This is a British "head on a spike" type of movie that pulls no punches, so feel warned.

The church scene is one of the coolest action scenes ever.

Last night I had an awesome night-in movie date with my girlfriend. We watched Frank Capra's film adaptation of Arsenic & Old Lace (1944).

It was her first time seeing the classic and she loved every crazy minute of it, (particularly the President Taft joke toward the end.)

And BTW - that's when you know you're with the right woman - when she doubles over at a frikkin joke about William Taft.

Went and saw the latest Avengers, it was an Avengers movie.
Really looking forward to Mad Max: Fury Road next week.
And I really, really want to see Ex Machina.

Certainly are. It's apparently a must see now. I can't wait.

Engine 05-11-2015 11:04 PM

Agree with all the positive sentiments about Ex Machina, absolutely fascinating and beautiful film with gorgeous soundtrack. Somewhat intellectually stimulating too.

I also saw the new Avengers (best of the Whedon foray into Marvel comics IMO - dude just can't lose).

Also too saw What We Do In The Shadows. Predictable Flight of the Conchords-esque humor and definitely not a must-see-on-the-big-screen film but funny.

bob. 05-12-2015 09:18 AM

i'm half tempted to call out of work tonight to go see Ex Machina again....i really cannot wait to go see this film again

as for Fury Road.....i was sold when i read Tom Hardy was playing Max......i completely bought in when that first teaser came out....now i know exactly what i'm doing Friday morning :)

hint

it's probably seeing Ex Machina again then seeing Fury Road :)

Black Francis 05-12-2015 11:52 AM

98% Approval rating over at Rotten Tomatoes as of this morning. Extremely high for an action movie.

bob. 05-12-2015 04:51 PM

I've seen Montage of Heck twice now.....and while it is an amazing and beautiful documentary about one of my all time favorite musical artists....it's extremely sad...right from the get go....and seeing him obliterated on heroin and holding his daughter really tugged at my heart strings

still very well done....of course it is...Brett Morgen has yet to do an uninteresting documentary

still very sad

If What We Do In The Shadows is just funny, could you tell me your favorite comedies from the past few years (or beyond)? Good comedies are rare as hell.

Jumping in here to just mention that They Came Together is on Netflix and is f*cking hilarious.

I had Hbo and i changed it to starz. :(

Im thinking of switching back to Hbo just to see it.

I saw an interview on Brett and the doc and the interviewer pointed out the exact scene you mentioned as being very heartbreaking.

Mad Max: Fury Road

For the first time since The Dark Night, I have dragged myself out to a theater to see a big name film on opening night. I just don't do it. I like to get to the theater on dead nights and a week or two after the film has come out. It's just quieter. For some reason I really wanted to see this film as soon as I could due to all the rave reviews I've been seeing so far. Rave reviews for an R rated reboot/sequel of a franchise that hasn't had a film in over 20 years? Yeah, I had to see it. I'm glad I did. It ended up being a f*cking blast.

I haven't seen a Mad Max film since high school. I think a bunch of us sat down and just put them on one after the other and got drunk. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of the universe. The movies were great. Don't get me wrong. I just wasn't part of the culture of Mad Max. I was always a Water World type of person.

That's a joke.

George Miller's return to non-dancing/talking animals is pretty special. I don't think I've seen a resurrection like this in a long ass time. The film was kick f*cking ass. I can't really call myself a huge action film person. I love story and character development and most of them are missing those two elements. A good handful of films have been able to not only include those two qualities, but also deliver some breathtaking set pieces to go along with it. I'm a fan of the last two Planet of the Apes films. The Batman trilogy was solid. The original Die Hard is one of my favorite films. Besides Batman, I like my action films without superheroes. It's no surprise that I ended up liking this film so much. As completely batsh*t insane this movie was, I didn't really get a sense that none of it could ever happen. The action was somewhat realistic, if we were to ever get as savage as these people that is.

To be honest, I didn't really understand what the hell was going on for the first ten minutes or so of the film. It was a little jarring to just be shoved into this world of huge lady breast feeding, white zombie looking fellas, and roving marauders with no fear of death. Thankfully this wasn't a huge deal. I quickly learned that I didn't need to know anything about this world that they were in. The planet is sh*t and most people are sh*t. Here's a truck with Charlize Theron in it. Go! I was on board.

Speaking of Charlize Theron, this is her movie. I know it is called Mad Max. I know that Tom Hardy was very good in the lead role, but I was way more drawn to Theron as Furiosa. She's the one that started this whole movie into overdrive. Hell, without her, Max would still be a hood ornament. The fact that was kicked just as much ass as Max while only having one arm was also a major draw in. I wouldn't mind seeing a movie that completely focused on her. Theron was that good.

The action was pretty phenomenal. There were some quiet scenes that pushed the story forward a little bit but for the most part the audience is treated to balls to the f*cking floor action. Like a nine year old's Legos box, the vehicles that came from left to right over the course of the movie ranged from terrifying to hilarious. You had spiked cruisers, sand bikes, teeter totter trucks, and my favorite of all, the sound trailer. I wonder how my man got the job on the guitar? Dude has it made. Actually, Miller was able to not only show us an insane character like the guitar marauder, but his inclusion actually helped make the score more intense. I was on the edge of my seat during these car chases.

If you want to have more films like this in theaters, then go see this movie. Huge budget rated R films don't happen a thousand times a year. Go and see this film to show that there is an audience for these kind of movies. Go see the film because it's looney-bin crazy too. That's also a reason to go.

4.5/5

Chula Vista 05-14-2015 09:23 PM

The Zero Theorem

A newer Gilliam film where he really does a good job of creating his own little dystopian universe. I liked it a fair bit but I feel like it would benefit with less reliance on CG and a better soundtrack because those gave it a somewhat cartoony element that didn't quite mesh with the themes it covered. Christoph Waltz and Matt Damon put on great performances alongside the rest of the cast.

The Babadook

I ****ing loved this film. It's rare where I can watch a horror film and actually be frightened throughout when the movie doesn't use any jump scares. The cast was incredible along with the soundtrack and camera work in this blend of spectral and psychological horror. I had wanted to see this since Exo posted up his review in here and now it's on Netflix so you have no excuse to miss this. Honestly I think it's one of the best horror films I've ever seen. 10/5

Guybrush 05-15-2015 02:43 AM

Just saw Mad Max yesterday and I agree with Exo who wrote a rather good post. Go watch it!

I don't have much more to add other than I was very impressed that this movie actually got made. Most of it happens at high speed and I can only imagine how much more difficult this makes everything. It makes it much more difficult to organize and choreograph, to shoot, the stunts get more dangerous and resetting everything takes longer. Add to that the fact that most shots only last a few seconds .. very impressive!

Other than that, Exo is spot on. Theron is really good and the movie is just pedal to the floor crazy adrenaline action bonanza. You could take out an arbitrary 10 minutes of action and it would be the climax of any other movie, but here it's almost non-stop.

Also loved the Babadook and liked The Zero Theorem :) The first I would recommend to all who like creepy, psychological horror and the latter to all who like Terry Gilliam and know what they're in for.

Oriphiel 05-15-2015 10:22 PM

For the first time in recent memory, I watched an action movie with a ton of CGI that didn't bore/bug the hell out of me. That movie was Mad Max: Fury Road. After the radiation kicks in and an extra arm pops out of my torso, I'll give it three thumbs up.

The guitar dude/tribal drum truck was worth the price of admission alone.

Mad Max: Fury Road

2 solid hours of nothing but cars blowing up.....

purrrrfect! :)

It's really weird to see everyone agreeing on something so readily. I guess crazy stunts and exploding cars are something that everyone can appreciate.

Last movie I actually watched was Captain America: The Winter Soldier...

Thelonious Monkey 05-18-2015 07:01 PM

Recently watched Mad Max. I hardly watched a trailer, and had no idea what I was going to watch. One of my friends said he had seen the originals, and we should go see what the new one was like. Not disappointed one bit. Crazy carnage man. And that bit where Furiosa rips Immorten's face off was badass as fuck. That whole scene was intense. Loved it.

Oriphiel 05-19-2015 05:24 AM

^ This man speaks the truth. Verily, the movie was more volatile than a dozen gallons of guzzo-line.

Maybe Norton's best work. Quite old though? It came out in 1998.

Exactly what I had hoped it would be. Most fun I've had at a movie since Django Unchained or Wolf of Wall Street.

Ex Machina

It’s my film of the year so far. It provoked a lot of interesting theories as far as creation goes. It made me more afraid of the future than I already am. It provides two incredible performances from Vikander and Isaac and needs to be seen for the dance scene alone. I’m glad it came out when it did because it’s going to be buried by Avengers, but if you’re trying to see a film and want to duck around the Marvel crowds, this is your film. It’s one of the better sci-fi films to come out in some time and is a wonderful sign that Alex Garland will be making thought provoking films for a long time.

4.5/5

Just saw this and completely loved it.

RL Clown 05-19-2015 03:10 PM

The latest movie I saw was The Gunman. There was a lot of action in that movie (no doubt about that). But some scenes were a little too confusing. It was an okay film.

Frownland 05-21-2015 12:39 AM

So after watching The Babadook for the fourth or fifth time, I can firmly say that it has a spot in my top ten films. It definitely rewards repeat viewings while maintaining the ambiguity of whether it's real or not. There's just a lot of depth to it and it helps a lot that the acting, soundtrack, and cinematography are all impeccable (except for Claire's performance, that was decent but the two leads were phenomenal).

Can't wait for this director's next feature.
