I saw Bodies Bodies Bodies the other night and thought it was fun. Good satire thrown in with a semi-interesting murder mystery plot and one hell of a comedic performance by Rachel Sennott. It was like a poor mans Jordan Peele movie.

It didn’t really remind me of Jordan Peele’s work in any way but I did like it a lot. Rachel Sennott is absolutely the highlight, she alone makes the movie worth seeing

Beau is Afraid was incredible. Touches on so many ideas in such an adventurous way. There are points at the end where it tries to make up for other (excellent) parts where it gets a little over its head but that's really the only downside I saw to it. There were interesting videogamey aspects similar to parts I really liked in Barbarian, and the narrative is a ****ing rollercoaster ride of wild decisions and approaches. I'll need another watch to see if it's Ari Aster's best, but it's certainly his most ambitious in a way that really pays off. Also one of the best and most disorienting opening scenes I've ever seen, especially good in theaters.

I also loved it. I did not expect it to be as funny as it was, no idea Aster could execute this kind of tone. I also have my own mommy daddy issues obviously so I connected with that lmao
Joaquin Phoenix was insanely great. The plot flowed really well and was pretty much constantly interesting. Pretty much a slam dunk for me, I definitely liked this more than Midsommar but I’m not sure how it measures up against Hereditary |

Spoilers ahead btw A lot of the movie can easily be called plagiarism, but I think there's a severe degree of homage in the movie meant to show the kinds of things that would influence a character like that given that he refuses to interact with anything unless he's forced to. The protagonist is as if you never touched your controller in a videogame and got all of the essential narrative sequences that make more sense when you fully play the game, and with his reclusive nature I think they're saying he's understanding the world through the lens of media far more than he realizes, hence the heavy degree of reference. There are parts directly taken from Synecdoche, New York, It's Such a Beautiful Day, Mulholland Drive, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things from what I noticed, and parts of Antkind (which I'm still working on). I prefer Midsommar to Hereditary btw and thinking more about it, Scaring the Beaus is probably his best. Hereditary drives at his most powerful messaging, but his other films are just some pure ass cinema that I can't help loving. I might catch Evil Dead tonight. Not even that crazy about the series, but the new one looks like a blast. |

Enjoyed “How to Blow Up a Pipeline”. Very fast, kinetic pacing with a cool narrative structure. There are some ridiculously tense scenes where characters are making/moving bombs that were particularly awesome. Good cast that executes the solid script well, and the eco “terrorists” have well defined motivations. Big recommend

Saw Beau is Afraid again. God I love it. There are several interpretations of what is even happening and all of them are interesting to consider. There are still a couple things that I’m not sure how to analyze:

Polite Society: absolutely awesome. Reminded me a lot of Scott Pilgrim but honestly kind of better? Good performances, hilarious script, fun plot structure and pacing. 4/5
Sisu: a pile of garbage. What movie are people watching that is leading to this getting good scores? This is the most boring version of "some villainous people ****ed with the wrong guy" movie that I've ever seen. People say that John Wick fans will love it. Why? John Wick actually does **** and beats people up. Almost every "cool" thing Sisu guy does is off screen. The movie is gray, bland, lifeless, and boring. 1/5 |

Bacurau Hell. Yes. Fantastic film. Tarantino fiends would love this. Slow start with such a wonderful tone shift midway through. Doesn't hold your hand. Don't touch my f*cking hand. Gah, so good. |
