Todo sobre mi madre (All about my mother) - Pedro Almodovar I haven't seen this one in many years, but I've seen it so many times that some things were still familiar to me. What I forgot about was just how funny this movie is (or maybe now that I understand much more Spanish, I understand the humour better). It remains one of my favorite movies and the soundtrack is gorgeous too - Tajabone kills me every time. It's also wonderful to see an almost exclusive female cast, all of which are fantastic (well I'm not totally sold on Cecilia Roth but she does alright). It's amazing how rich Spain is in fabulous and colorful characters.

Hable con ella (Talk to her) - Pedro Almodovar We're doing a small Almodovar refresher cycle, focusing on what I consider his artistic pinnacle trilogy (Todo sobre mi madre, Hable con ella, La mala educacion). This one is less funny and less emotional than Todo sobre mi madre, but still has plenty of memorable scenes which pack a punch. Like for example this Caetano Veloso showstopper: Or the Pina Bausch scenes, the corrida scenes, the silent movie etc etc. many of which are now iconic. I loved Rosario Flores as the matador. I didn't know she was actually a singer and not an actor until quite recently. Almodovar has a fantastic talent in finding exceptionally interesting people to play in his movies. The music is of course fantastic. I'd give it a 4/5 (with Todo sobre mi madre being 5/5).

The Verdict (1982, Sidney Lumet) A great director, a David Mamet script and Paul Newman lead a very good supporting cast in a story about a medical malpractice case that redeems an alcoholic attorney at the bottom of his personal and professional life. Mason (Newman's foil-defender) has a bone-chilling monologue about the corruption that keeps the entire legal process going which seems especially poignant now. |

Hands of Orlac is on youtube for free (I think it's because it's public domain.) and I think the score they used for that upload was even better.
I remember watching Nosferatu on Netflix and absolutely hating the score they used. I think if they used something similar to YubenTuben's Hands of Orlac it'd make it much much better.

Is that a thing? Is there a thing where bands or artists will just remake their version of a score for a silent movie?

Art Zoyd has done that with Nosferatu, Metropolis, Häxan, and Faust.
It's also pretty common for orchestras to perform a live soundtrack for a film. I've seen the Alloy Orchestra play an original soundtrack for Metropolis and a John Luther Adams symphony performance for The Passion of Joan of Arc. Went to the latter thinking that it was a John Coolidge Adams piece they were playing (as you can tell by his name his music is far cooler) but both were still great experiences.
