Omg, this is straight up the funniest movie I've seen in years

Edit: Alright, I finished it. Big rec for anyone looking for an absurdist comedy. I was seriously crying at every turn.

Mom: "I didn't want to be your mother!"

Son: "What?"

Mom: "I tried to miscarry you!"

Son: "WHAT?"

Mom: "It didn't work, though!"

Son: "How did you try to miscarry me?"

Mom: "I don't know. Lots of ways. I did everything I wasn't supposed to!"

*awkward silence*

Mom: "I mean, I'm glad it didn't work..."

I'm glad I'm not the only one. The movie was really good at building tension but at the same time the flying was hilarious and all the scenes with people lurking in the background.

Lucem, you're right, it's silly to talk about what I would or wouldn't do IRL. Glad you brought it up. Maybe you should write an instrumental about it. I recommend a piano paired with a clarinet. With ambient sounds of you hanging from your shower curtain you ****ing failure.

I'm actually just now figuring out that it wasn't supposed to be a comedy, and it's kinda breaking my heart

I've never misinterpreted a movie so hard before, and it's ****ing surreal, but yeah, everyone online is talking about how scary it was

But like, how was this supposed to be a straight horror? Every single moment, every inflection of every line of dialogue, had such perfectly awkward comedic timing

The part where the stupid stoner guy drives his sister's face into a telephone pole destroyed my gut

And then the mom makes a ****ing diorama of her daughter's death. "It's just a neutral vantage of her getting killed!"

And the part where the mom casually drops that she woke up from a sleepwalk standing over her kids, covering them with paint thinner, and lighting a match

And that evil mastermind Joan lady? "OH HEY, FRIEND! LET'S HAVE A SEANCE! JUST READ THIS OBVIOUSLY EVIL INCANTATION. I DON'T KNOW WHAT LANGUAGE IT IS, BUT IT'S GREAT!"

And the look on the dad's face when his wife tells him her mom's headless corpse is chilling in the attic

Like, **** me, I'm not even trying to be a jerk, I really truly had a great time laughing along with this movie, and now it turns out that I was actually laughing at it, and I'm conflicted

Does this mean that Hereditary is a stupid movie? I remember liking it even I'm not as over the moon as other people.

Tbh, I have no idea what it means.

Like, I totally had a great time with it. I enjoyed it. It's just that I was apparently enjoying it in a different way than everyone else. And I'm fine with leaving it at that.

But I will say that I'm glad I didn't see it in theaters, 'cause I absolutely would not have been able to hold my **** together, and my constant laughing would have ruined everyone else's time.

Everything's a comedy if you're drunk enough.

Nah, I think it's a ****ed up sense of humor. I got both though. Cause it still had a very tense and unnerving atmosphere. But at the same time the mom came off as really goofy more than anything. Her flying though. I thought that was the funniest and most unexpected thing.

It sucks if Hereditary's that tone deaf because A24 are a great studio and have made some great films.

No, it's a great film. I just think me and Ori have a weird sense of humor. Anytime somebody gets hit by a car it's funny to me, for what ever reason. Even when I got hit by a truck.
