No Country For Old Men - 9/10

Bardem's character is ridiculously fantastic.

chartsengrafs 04-03-2008 04:44 PM

i consider no country for old men to be the best movie with the worst ending ever.

cardboard adolescent 04-03-2008 04:56 PM

the ending was perfect

SPOILERS

i would have rather seen a final showdown between the two than have the main protagonist killed randomly.. they didn't even show him get killed. i like that the bad guy got away and all.. but they screwed over lewelyn

Edited: right-track

That was my gripe too, but it was later explained to me that that's what the book is like, it's focused more on the musings of the sheriff. So in the book, that part is less abrupt.

Not as good as I'd hoped it would be. I was much more moved by The sea within by Alejandro Amenabar. Still, it's a good watch. Maybe it would have been a different experience had I known it's based on a real person. :\
7/10

Considering I am a child of the 80's, I always missed out on this film. Until tonight. Some nice moments but overall disappointment. If I had watched it when it had came out then I would have loved it I think.

This has been sitting on my shelves for a months now and I could kick myself for not watching it sooner. I love Michael Mann and this shot on HD movie did not disappoint. He is one of the very best visual stylists working in Hollywood today. he has a great ear for music in his movies too.

I hate to use this term, but that would be a typical Hollywood ending that would not work with this film, or with the Coens. The sheriff's end musings are metaphors for his life and while the film doesn't center on him as much as it should have to make those make sense, it still works well.

iLoveBlood 04-04-2008 11:40 AM

the movie and the book are called No Country For OLD MEN, not No country for Josh Brolin. Sheriff Bell is the main character and both pieces of material are about the nature of violence in an increasingly changeing world. Life and violence behave arbitrarily and so the book and film depict that accurately.

Brolin meets his demise because of the satchel of money, regardless of who dispatches him in the end, but since none of the characters that are actually in pursuit witness his end neither do we as the audience.

9.8/10

i watched mysterious skin last night, it was pretty good

adidasss 04-04-2008 12:41 PM

Tell me something, would you categorize it as a gay film?

cardboard adolescent 04-04-2008 01:13 PM

only because i associate gregg araki with gay cinema

if i had gone into it not knowing anything about the director though,
i'd look at it more as a drama about child abuse rather than a gay film

No Country for Old Men ***1/2

Awesome movie, excellent performances all around and naturally the Coen bros are in fine form here, overall just a very entertaining character driven suspense thriller. The ending seemed a bit anti-climatic to me though.

Sweeny Todd ***

I'm a big Tim Burton fan, but I have to say I expected it to be better, but overall I still quite liked it, I like the musical numbers and Depp is surprisingly a pretty good singer. Talk about a melancholy ending though.

Walk Hard
Surprisingly enjoyable. I loved Jack Black playing Paul Mcartney.

Sleepaway Camp 5/10

Standard teen slasher until the ending when the writers had to have thought, "This is all pretty trite and predictable. What could we do to really fuck everyone up?" And there's your ending.

North By Northwest

it was pretty amazing

SweetTears 04-07-2008 06:41 AM

Just seen Rob Zombie's Halloween. Great. Gore. It was an awesome movie.

No Country For Old Men

It was a pretty good film, although it felt like it was longer than it had to be. The psycho in it is one of the best characters i've seen in a while, the image of him with the gas cylinder is one that sticks in my mind. He does freak me out though :s
Some good acting and a bit of gore which is always good. I'd say it was pretty a good film, 7/10 or something.

Visually inventive but it just ran out of steam. I was hoping for something a little darker considering Bernia's characters delusional episodes. I also found Gainsbourg to be a complete turn off both physically and emotionally. Certainly not awful but a wasted premise definitely.

Sparky 04-07-2008 02:59 PM

Lee, have you seen the Japanese film "Nobody knows"?

No, do you recommend it?

adidasss 04-07-2008 03:19 PM

I've seen it and I absolutely loved it. Based on a true story about kids whose mother abandons them and they're left to fend for themselves...Best Koreeda's film...

I need to write an analysis for it. What did you think was the overall theme?

I was thinking something about resiliency? But i wanted somebody elses opinion.

What the hell did you make of the mother? I couldn't figure her out, she seems selfish. But still seems to love the kids a lot, i dont know how to stereotype her.

I'm not sure what the central theme is, perhaps abandonment or child neglect. You can throw in resiliency although I'm not sure about that seeing as how they don't really manage to stay in control very long. I'm not very good at analysis.

I'd describe the mother as a monster...that's the only word that comes to mind because I really can't process what she did to those kids...no matter how gentle she was when they were together, what she did was inexcusable. Pure selfishness.

Sparky 04-07-2008 04:00 PM

Well, i meant resilient in the way of them still loving each other and sticking together.

Its a hard movie to analyze because it doest follow any formula >.<

Did you know he didn't even give the kids scripts?

adidasss 04-07-2008 04:33 PM

Nope, but it makes sense, their acting was superb...

Deathproof, it needed less talking and more car crashes/chases but still a fun film, car chase at the end was pretty entertaining

also, someone needs to tell tarantino that not everyone likes feet as much as him

Malicious Wakizashi 04-08-2008 04:28 PM

I saw Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels recently and it was awesome.

Mondo Bondo - 7.5/10 Entertaining documentary about the bondage scene in San Francisco.

Jack Brooks Monster Slayer - 7/10 Ridiculous over the top horror comedy from Canada. Perfect midnight movie fodder.

TimeCrimes - 7.9/10 Solid little time travel thriller from Spain.

And thats all for now, will be seeing much more as the weeks roll on...
