Missed this. You probably know that I'm going to say try again and I will but first I want to ask you how often it is that you enjoy character driven films? Seems like a theme across movies that you dislike.

TWBB is a fascinating display of power struggle accented by the effects of modern capitalism on the mind and family. The soundtrack, cinematography, and performances are just the icing on the cake. Try again.

Did you like Inherent Vice?
I haven't seen it yet because I forgot that that existed, ****. It'll be the next movie that I check out (**** Dunkirke).

i guess punch drunk love left a little tiny bit to be desired but it's still a really good movie

Easily his best imo.

TWBB is up there but I prefer the plot and setting of BN.

JTF said PTA-lite, I say it's PTA deconstructed. I feel like he's carving an interesting path with this one.

Quite a lot of films that I watch are character driven. The majority fall into that wider category of drama films that tend to be character driven and/or very thematically driven. I think that my dislike of certain movies of the sort comes down to other things, but it's not always easy to pinpoint exactly why a movie just isn't clicking.

The main reason why I feel like I ought to actually give it another chance is this: I'm not sure I actually made it all the way through back then. Plus it was a long, long time ago. Plus I've liked those other movies by the same directer that I've watched since.

I won't say anything about it, then.

EDIT: Didn't realize Magnolia was also PTA. Need to see that one again. It's been so long I can't remember anything except Tom Cruise's character in the movie.

No, those two definitely go a lot lower. TWBB is beautifully shot, well acted, has a great concept, and has a great score, but it's somehow lacking something a fundamental way. By the end of the movie, I found myself just not really caring. The Master was like that too, but with less impressive cinematography and a less memorable score.
