Just watched La La Land. Pretty bummed that I missed it in the theaters, as it's a damn gorgeous movie. The music wasn't half bad. It's rare that I wish a musical would have more songs, but that's pretty much the case with this movie.

Interestingly bittersweet, somewhat unsatisfying ending. I mean, a good, interesting ending, but brave in that it doesn't give you that easy, nice Hollywood wrap up that you'd expect it to give you. So it's not entirely a feel good movie, although it ends up being so anyway by virtue of it's rich soundtrack and wildly creative and colorful visuals.

There was a very short moment near the end where the actors basically walk inside a set that looks like an impressionist painting. I couldn't help but feel disappointed they hadn't done the whole movie in that style. It would have been something truly special.

Anyway, very good movie. Ryan Gosling has a bit more range than I thought he did. Turns out he can do more than just brood.

And of course Emma Stone was good. I'll watch almost any movie as long as she's in it.

If anyone's seen this movie, could someone please explain the "deal" that's made between the mafia heavy-weight and Jacky (The main actor). I think if this gets explained to me, the rest of the film will sorta fall right in my lap. Beautiful cinematography though and the acting is incredible, all around.
Intense film. Loved it.

I think the deal was that is that if he stalled the deal between the family farm and the 3rd party beef trader (which would have taken profits from the mob) they'd keep Jacky supplied with hormones.

In reality, Hitler is the real hero of Dunkirk.

Loved La La Land. I love how they gave so much time to actors who couldn't sing. It made their songs feel so much more intimate than if sung by Broadway veterans. It was like real people were just singing to express their feelings because god damn it they wanted to express their feelings. And even the dance numbers were the same. It's not an approach that would work in general, but in this case was brilliant.

Yes I think it worked very well. In the opening scene, they clearly used a whole bunch of professional dancers, but I don't think the contrast gets in the way, since a lot of the songs are these dramatic, character oriented moments. The final dance with Gosling and Stone has a lot of visual fireworks going on with the sets and the lighting, to it ends up being very flashy and exciting, even if their dancing couldn't have lifted the scene alone.

A movie where a similar approach didn't work in my opinion was Les Miserables. The one from a few years ago with Russell Crowe, Jackman, Hathaway, etc. Every song in that movie was an outright torture session.

I still have not seen La La Land since I have an irrational aversion to Emma Stone. (I just find her bland.) I feel like I'd either adore it madly or find it horribly insufferable, with no in between.

(my favorite musical type movie is actually Enchanted because I'm 5 years old I guess)

I really liked her in Birdman and have basically been eager to see her in movies since then. She also has those huge Marion Cotillard eyes, which I'm a sucker for.

It helps if you like the music and the visuals in La La Land, since it's a pretty simple story as such.

Her eyes have always looked froglike to me (though not in a bad way ofc, she's a very beautiful frog)

I'm a Disney slut so I feel you (and I love Enchanted) , but watch La La Land. It's a singular experience that you'll feel privileged to see. It's just a great movie.
