I'm always really, REALLY wary of Von Trier films but I'm really kind of curious about that one.

Anyway:

http://caffeine-headache.net/blog3/T...se%20James.jpg

I've had this for a while but not watched it because it's kind of rare that I'm in the mood a glacially paced, 2 hr 40 min western. But I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The major criticism I've heard of it is that it feels muddy because it's sort of unclear why Bob shot Jessie, but I like that about it--the two men had a complex and contradictory relationship and both Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck did really well characterising that. The music was great, there are a bunch of great bit parts/cameos (Mary Louise Parker, Zooey Deschanel, Nick Cave, Sam Shepard). It is really slow, especially through the middle, but it's always gorgeous to watch--the cinematography is like watching paintings move.

All in all, well done.

Man, Paul Thomas Anderson really can direct. And the writing ain't half bad too, good film. All the ingredients a rom-com has but with a quirky, bizarre edge. If PTA releases a couple more solid films, I may have to consider him as a favourite director. He's yet to have a flop.

ooh! i love PTA and haven't seen this.

I think you're right...they all can seem a bit long actually. And I also liked Holy Grail more than Life of Brian, but really they all have some classic lines that just stick in your brain.

Life of Brian is 93 minutes, Holy Grail is 89. They do feel a bit longer than they are but not that long. At least not for me--you do have to have a lot of patience for the ridiculous.

VERY surprising film.
I recommend it to all ye.

^I've heard good things about this film. That's one of the few Ryan Gosling films I haven't seen. I just realized recently that I've seen the majority of his films, totally unintentionally, like, I wasn't on a mission to see specifically his films and wasn't even aware it's the same actor in half of them. He's one of those actors that are good in disappearing behind characters and has some interesting films. Is he good in this one?

debaserr 09-09-2010 02:44 PM

have you seen half nelson? it's his best.

i just read an interview with Casper Noé about the premiere (at cannes) of his new film 'Enter The Void' in which he states that Antichrist stole his thunder by opening a few day earlier.....

i need to see this

I need to see this too.

i watched the preview on youtube....and it literally looks like a neon nightmare....and that it may cause seizers in non-epileptic people!

'70s style science fiction done really quite well. I enjoyed that.

dankrsta 09-10-2010 06:56 PM

^I was a little underwhelmed by Moon. It started very promising, but as it went on, it loosened its grip and in the end I just didn't care. Maybe I wasn't engaged enough. But, Sam Rockwell was good though.

I just read a synopsis after watching that trailer, and it seems to be very intriguing, apart from that visual madness. I didn't even know about this film, but it'll be on my radar now.

Nine Black Poppies 09-10-2010 07:04 PM

Moon definitely shifted tone a bit as it went on--went from being sort of a "what's going on?" puzzle to something more character oriented, but I sort of appreciated that since I was a little afraid it would turn into a Shyamalan-style "gotcha" based on the first 20 minutes or so. Watching the interaction between the two of them was really interesting and yeah, Rockwell did a great job with that. I also liked how they played up certain conventions and then flouted them, like Gerty's obvious resemblances to HAL in the first part of the film.

Enter the Void does look sort of interesting--I dunno that I could watch it in the dark, but I might pick it up if I ever see it around.

dankrsta 09-10-2010 07:41 PM

The part of the problem might be that I was going into Moon with great expectations, after hearing so many good things about it. I can't quite put my finger on what I was expecting, maybe something with little more mystery to it (but not in that cheap Shyamalan manner) and less revealing and transparency later on. Basically, I expected a different film, but that's my problem I guess. Well, I need to rewatch it with a different mindset to form a full opinion.

It was bad. I mean REALLY bad, and not even in that Syfi Saturday Night 10 P.M. crapfest they parade out every weekend for stoned shut-ins like me. Sean Lawlor's fake Irish accent was horrendous, and here's the funny thing, HE'S FREAKIN' IRISH! How in the fuck does an Irishman mess up his own language? I came into this expecting it to be bad but in a humorous way, but it couldn't even do me that one simple task. A pox on this film!

Could you recommend me any similar films to Irreversible? Not necessarily the penises and rape and all... but something gritty and and intense with unique filming styles.

333 09-11-2010 01:26 AM

Antichrist, Irreversible, and Moon are all AMAZING films. Antichrist and Irreversible .. What mind fucks. Irreversible kept me from having sex the night I watched it. Antichrist was just so well-done. The acting is almost immaculate. Emotional movie, though. I feel like it drained me.

I was really impressed with Moon, too. Great story and it seems so original. Slow at times, but this movie birthed a new, found respect for Rockwell. Also, Kevin Spacey as Gerty? Yesssss.

Freebase: Have you seen Mulholland Dr.? If not, check it out. It might be what you're looking for.

Yea, saw M. Drive several times, along with all of Lynch's other flicks. They're OK, some better than others, but I generally come out of each experience with the feeling he makes no sense for the express purpose of making no sense. I don't really dig that very much.

NumberNineDream 09-11-2010 07:09 AM

^I usually simply get mind fuked at every time.
If you want to find sense, you just will, you don't need the director to spoon-feed it to you.

Actually, his films make a lot of sense, they just demand a participation and an effort on your part as a viewer, as well. But, that sense is surreal, so you're not going to fully grasp everything with a strictly analytical, 'mathematical' mindset. You have to let your imagination do the thing also.

That's a damn shame to hear. I've got to disagree with you, though. There's always abstract art present in society. In film, I find it rare that anyone steps outside of their comfort zone. Though I haven't seen all of his Lynch's films, I can definitely attest from the ones I've viewed that this director does not follow any kind of standard formula and for that alone, I've got respect for him as an artist. His films are always open for interpretation, and some people like it, some people don't. I know I'm not always in the mood for it. Just as I'm not always in the mood to read something really deep that provokes unavoidable thoughts, or analyze a piece of art that thrives off the observer's point of view. That is why I prefer music. Though always open to interpretation, you can simply sit, listen and absorb.

Can't say I enjoyed it much. I felt like they were trying to hard with the 3D. I mean, it was ok, but, I couldn't really find myself caring much for it. So I guess the verdict is, this is one you can skip.

A sequel, based on a video game, in 3D. With such a pedigree who could ever have guessed that it would be skippable.

^ It takes about 50 minutes for anything like an inciting incident to happen., which says everything it needs to about this overlong, bloated, pretentious borefest. Dunno why I thought it'd be any good really.

http://moviesoftheday.com/upload/cov...ce-cover-3.jpg

^ Up until that nasty guy with the dodgy eye gets shot about an hour in, I thought this was a really good movie. For the half hour or so after that, I just lost interest. Added cool points for having Ed Harris in it though.

http://cdn1.ioffer.com/img/item/153/706/032/YtvF.jpg

^ This was pretty cool the whole way through though. Re-setting one of the British old-timer classics in the States would usually border on sacrilege (a'la Alfie), but I think it works quite well here. Hard to follow sometimes, what with there being three narrative threads and all, but worth it.

Ed Harris and the violence are about the only watchable things going for that movie...
