It's gotta suck to let a broad brush worldview built on Westerns kill your appreciation of a brilliant character exploration and defining American epic.

Thoughts on Forrest Gump? :D

Just stop with your shoot from the hip comebacks. It's my opinion dillweed. Deal with it without being condescending. For once. Give it a try. You might like it.

Plainview has a meeting early on with some pretty powerful dudes and threatens to cut and kill one of them in a fit of rage. Plainview has no power at that point. The dude he threatens has a big outfit. Figure it out Einstein.

Wow, that's pretty pretentious of you.

Also my point still stands that not conforming to your Wild West standards is not reason enough to ignore everything that's brilliant about the film (and yes, that includes the plot).

So typica........ Ah **** it. You'll never get it punk. Don't waste a reply. It'll fall on deaf ears. Go jack off instead. Much more gratification. Trust me.

That damn typical logical thinking of mine. Gotta hate it when it gets pulled on your irrational drunk ass.

I really do think you're letting that one small point (that isn't inherently true or justified) overshadow everything that's great about the film. And that's an F- in my books.

Absolutely stupid and completely unbelievable story? That's where it completely loses me.

In the old west Daniel Plainview would have been shot in the back at night pretty early on for being such a total prick.

TWBB is one of the best movies to come out in the past twenty years. Great acting, cinematography, direction, story, and everything down to the last piece of clothing. Lots of pricks survived in the Old West, its kind of the way things went. Morality wasn't a big part of the Old West, not sure where you are going with that. Its loosely based on Sinclair's Oil which is a fantastic novel also, based on a family that was integral in bringing oil rigs to the California Coast. Its fantastic.

Different strokes for different folks.

Its grossed 76 million on a 25 million dollar budget, so the different folks did like the strokes. Daniel Day Lewis is a tour de force.

Silence.

Long, ambitious, as well made as you'd expect from Scorsese, and well acted, especially Andrew Garfield's performance. Will watch again.

Scorcese usually does period pieces about as well as anyone. I'll certainly seek it out, because I like Garfield.
