Again, I didn't really see many films last year to make an accurate representation of what had or didn't have substance. All I know is that The Witch felt drawn out and boring. Sorry my opinion isn't the same as yours, but taste is subjective when it comes to movies.

Choose any film from any year that you feel has substance and for bonus points please explain how a film being slow makes it devoid of substance. Maybe you approached the film with the wrong expectations? That seems to be the cause of most negative reviews: expecting a Halloween or Scream level of thrilling horror film when The Witch is more of a drama with horror elements.

I saw the martian. That got boring. Inherent vice runs at the pace of doom metal played in slomo.
Not much to do but watch flix while in treatment. Scary flix + audiovisual hallucinations from cheeking pills = bad tomes.

You found The Martian boring? Wow.

i didn't like the martian either. not that it was boring it was just overrated. matt damon's character was a ****ing twat and i wanted to punch him in the face. the guy is facing death but instead of worrying he's cracking science jokes like he's channing tatum in 21 jump street.
it also just felt like another tacked on hollywood sci-fi. there was absolutely nothing special about it to give it any sort of character. no thanks.

i feel both The witch and Neon Demon got snubbed for Cinematography.....i also think La La land had better than both (and i loved both)
La La Land count 18 and it still feels fresh going to the theater tonight with people from work who want me to shut the fuck up....stupid fools...it's just going to make me worse I called my nephew you last night and went through every movie playing on Sunday.....i was expecting him to pick Resident Evil or maybe with luck hacksaw Ridge.....he went with La La Land....when i told him he didn't have to humor me...he said he saw the preview and thought it looked really good plus Emma stone is hot (14 year old).....kids got goooood taste. continuing my Oscar research.... Hidden Figures I loved this film! Again, but in a very different way, like Moonlight i went into this basically knowing what i was getting into, but got sooooo much more. This film is important, fun, endearing, well acted, just overall well done as much about race as it is about gender equality....and really just looking at somebody for the importance of their mind....i seriously loved this film....i gave me a very rare yet fleeting feeling of hope for humanity |

Do you get blasted whenever you watch La La Land or something? I thought the cinematography was sterile outside of the numbers if I'm being honest.

Watched Spring last night, really liked it, very strange blend of romance and horror. Since it's being passed around online as a "horror movie" I wasn't expecting the careful subtly, script, story, cinematography, and great acting that I got, the quality of this movie genuinely caught me off guard. I was going to post the trailer but after watching it I highly recommend going into this blind, you don't want to know ANYTHING about what's coming, all you need to know is that it's about an American dude growing up rough, giving up, ditching his hometown, and flying to Italy to start over fresh. Don't type Spring into Google Images, don't watch the trailer, don't read a review, just watch it.
