Aside from the film being incredibly well written and shot in the typical Wes Anderson style that I've come to enjoy in his films, the four reasons this film is great is because of the three leads and the man behind the camera. And the Bill Murray cameo.

When I was a teenager watching his films I thought his characters were so emotionally flat. Now as an adult I watch his films and I think how absurd and dramatic characters in other films are. He's got this ability to SHOW us character whereas most writers and directors TELL us through the dialogue. |

Adam Curtis' HyperNormalization (2016)
I'm an hour in but have to pause it to get some sleep. Resuming the moment I get home tomorrow. Frighteningly relevant (as always), and the soundtrack features Aphex Twin, NIN, Cliff Martinez, Clint Mansell, Suicide, Ennio Morricone, and others.

I finally got around to seeing Dr. Strange and it was pretty great. I love that they explain his world and what he does for people that don't know his story. Marvel does pretty well with origin stories. I wasn't sure how well they would do with Dr. Strange though but the visual eye candy is crazy. I'm glad I didn't see it in 3D because I know my eyes would be hurting so much after that movie. It probably looks jawesome in IMAX 3D though.

Dr. Strange
Was worried about this one but I needn't have been. Was ****ing awesome. Some of the most ridiculous **** yet in a Marvel movie, yet their commitment to not shying away from comic book ludicrousness kept this from descending into embarrassing b-movie territory. Just as important were Benedict Cumberbatch (who couldn't have been more committed to the silly lines he was spewing) and an incredibly vivid and creative sense of imagination. If you don't like or are sick of comic book movies then this will not convert you, but if you're already on board then this will be yet another solid notch in Marvel's already notchified belt.

Drive was a hell of a movie... And I like some of his older stuff too. I guess its time to do it up.

Arrival Everybody owes it to themselves to see this film. Denis Villeneuve is now CEMENTED as my favorite director. He has surpassed Paul Thomas Anderson. That's how much I loved this movie. My god. DO NOT WATCH ANY TRAILERS FOR IT. GO IN BLIND. I can't stress that enough. It was a wild ass ride and I have no idea if the ads spoiled anything but it's likely they did because ads suck balls. I cried during this movie. I was sucked in. I was fully enveloped in the expertly crafted story. Villeneuve is a f*cking master at emotional depth and character building and even though I'm still elated after seeing it, it might be his best film. It might be one of the best sci-fi films ever. It's that good. It's human. It's suspenseful. It's heartbreaking. It's everything I love in a movie. Go f*cking see it. |
