Laces Out Dan! 02-26-2008 03:27 PM

Saw 'Rambo' the other night. And rented 'We Own the Night' last night.

MURDER JUNKIE 02-26-2008 03:32 PM

AND????

I thought We Own The Night blew, good soundtrack though

right-track 02-26-2008 03:35 PM

Rise of the Footsoldier.

It made Green Street look like Sesame Street.

MURDER JUNKIE 02-26-2008 03:41 PM

^ I must have!!!

I have heard that it is an awful film. So do you recommend it David? I know the story behind it is far more worthy than Green Street's pithy plot.

Rambo was gangster as expected. And I liked We Own the Night...was some slow parts. But I like Phoenix and Wahlberg a lot. So that probably helped.

I knew the story too (based on true occurrences) but I had my doubts before seeing it.
I imagined it to be another badly (and cheesy) made film portraying yet another East London football hooligan firm.

I was pretty surprised when it turned out to be anything but.
Graphically violent and genuinely shocking in parts.
Definitely not for the squeamish.
Some very convincing acting too.

See it for yourself.

^ West Ham v Millwall tube scene.

oops...loops in the middle for a bit...stick with it.

jackhammer 02-26-2008 05:22 PM

Looks tasty as...

Have you read this at all?:
Cass Pennant - Terrace Legends - review

I managed to pick it up in hardback for 99p about a year back. No nonsense gritty reading.

right-track 02-26-2008 05:33 PM

I'm aware of the book, but never read it.

Don't be misled by the clip I upped.
The story moves away from the football and onto his activities in the criminal underworld shortly after that scene.
The scene is relatively early on in the film and only after, does the story begin to gather real pace.

jackhammer 02-26-2008 05:37 PM

I was'nt misled. I am trying to get the necessary conkers together to buy the film tomorrow!

Kevorkian Logic 02-26-2008 05:50 PM

FLUBBER!!!!

don't ask why or where.

Great performances can't hind a film that shamefully plays with the truth and asks you to commit two hours of emotional investment in a character who didn't exist. Great Afro Beat soundtrack. I will have to find that one!

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

i enjoyed it , except for the ending. I wanna punch the director right in the face for cutting it off right when i was on the edge of my seat!

Ok the premise is flimsy but I was pleasantly surprised with this. Quite nihilistic and refreshingly free from your usual teenage horror film cliches.

cardboard adolescent 03-01-2008 01:19 PM

christ that film was stupid. i love how they get into the dead zone and chuck the cell phone out the window... fuckin' a

jackhammer 03-01-2008 01:43 PM

I'm a sucker for horror films though. some of the crap in my collection has to be seen to be believed. I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle anyone?

cardboard adolescent 03-01-2008 02:02 PM

i tend to only watch really stupid horror movies just so i can laugh at them and the occasional really good horror movie. anything in between just pisses me off.

MURDER JUNKIE 03-01-2008 02:16 PM

Gone Baby Gone

Really fantastic film that raises some interesting moral questions, Casey Affleck is going to be a far bigger star than his brother but his brother is going to be a hell of a director if he keeps spinning out quality pieces like this. Highly Recommended

People don't quite understand why I like horror films when I watch films by Almodavar, Bergman, Scorsese, Brakhage etc but why stick to one genre of movies. I absolutely detest pg 13 type of horror films. They have to be very gory or on the flip side very suggestive. Here's an example. Hostel. Christ that film really pissed me off. Eli roth claims that he has made the sickest movie ever. he takes us into a torture room then at the money shots the camera moves. either go all the way and show me you have the balls to put it on film or keep the camera outside of the room and suggest to the audience what is going on. There is one shot in the film where a guy is being wheeled around the torture factory and the guy (thus we) glimpse the various torture room,. That was much more horrifying.

i'm not into seeing violence for the sake of it though. It must have consequences and purposeful reasons (in the case of the protagonist at least) for me to appreciate it. Unless it's a zombie film of course, then I just want to see some chowing down!

iLoveBlood 03-01-2008 03:30 PM

movies watched in the last ten days or so:

this is england
paradise lost: the child murders at robin hood hills
thriller: a cruel portrait
vidas secas
inatacto
dust devil
beowulf
the nines
gone baby gone

jackhammer 03-01-2008 06:14 PM

^^
A good selection there.

Sparky 03-02-2008 12:30 AM

semi-pro

i thought it was hilarious, even though its absolutely terrible technically.

Same as. I tend to dislike horror movies because I rate their quality on how scary they are and I don't get scared easily. At least not by movies. One thing that makes me YAWN in a horror is an excess of gore. And I don't like the way a lot of modern horror movies tend to rip each other off. In my opinion, drama is essential for good horror.

yeah I know what you mean when it comes to horror but with me I give everything in horror a chance even the pg-13 ones.....half of the time they their horror elements are classy and demonstrated in the way that some of the R-rated ones should have taken their films then there's the other half of the time when they just rely on the pop-up factor with the music

I enjoyed Hostel 2 more than the first one though....I liked being able to see behind the scenes of the organization that bids on each victim and by purposeful reasons you mean like the Saw movies yes?

jackhammer 03-02-2008 06:49 AM

I have had a few people tell me that Hostel 2 is much better. I may give it a go.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 03-02-2008 06:53 AM

hostel 1 was good only for that bit where that girls head got dragged along the floor by a car : )

but yeah anyway.

so i saw romeo & juliet last night.
three times.
i thought i'd hate it, & i did the whole time i was watching it the first time.
& then it wouldn't leave my head and now i am in love.

..shakespeare's still a goon though (Y).

iLoveBlood 03-02-2008 08:45 AM

hostel 2 is a much better film is terms of pure horror, hostel 1 had some elements of teen sex comedy and film noir, but part two is much more along the lines of a classic bava or argento giallo film.

very kickass.

jackhammer 03-02-2008 09:16 AM

The words Bava, Argento and Giallo tells me you know your movies.

monellia 03-02-2008 10:42 AM

I can appreciate unecessary gore if it's very well done visually (warning-gore alert)

jackhammer 03-02-2008 10:58 AM

This is an even better head explosion. The guy getting his head blown off is the guy who done all the special effects and is something of a legend in F/X. His name is Tom Savini and he got most of his ideas from his days a war photographer in the Vietnam war. He has also worked on Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead (the vastly superior originals). If offended please look away now:
