The Shining. Over and out.

Staying on King, Delores Claiborne is a pretty amazing film adaption. Fight Club, No Country for Old Men, The Abyss, and Something Wicked this way Comes are all pretty killer too.

Fight Club, The Shining, and LOTR (I say the last one mainly due to writing style) are the only films I'd say are hands down better than the books.

I definitely wouldn't say LOTR. If that style of writing just doesn't appeal to you, then I understand, but the depth that the books bring to Tolkien's world is just absent from the movies. They're awesome, but not much more than action movies with a unique fantasy aesthetic. All of the little things that they cut out, like the songs, and the references to the mythos that existed outside of the books, all made for a series that was a gateway to a world that was massive and alive in a way that no other fantasy series can lay claim to. Period. Middle-Earth is real, god damn it.

Blade Runner IMO. I'm hyped for the sequel.

^Uh, how can you know if you haven't read the book yet?

The writing style is so bad that it distracts from the high points of the novel that you describe. Although I disagree on one point: the songs were a waste of space. The movie actually entertains me so it gets the edge.

I love the writing style. No other book that I can think of has a style that so brilliantly brings to life that kind of old world magic, while still being readable to a modern audience. I guess you could say that it has a dumbed down Shakespeare vibe, but it brings majesty to high fantasy in a way that I have never seen duplicated.
