I wouldn't put him in a truly dramatic role, but the guy can at least bring a character to life, even if that character is just some form of Adam Sandler. With the right role he could be a poor man's Jack Black (I'm thinking Bernie and not Nacho Libre). He definitely worked as an immature man-child in Click, though.
On the commentary track to Serenity, I remember Joss Whedon saying something to the effect that comedians can make for good dramatic actors, since comedic timing is even harder to nail down than dramatic timing. Granted, Joss Whedon is a glorified B-movie director, so grain of salt and all that, but he's not entirely wrong.
