I just watched a godawful trainwreck called The Last Dragon. All through the 70s, Barry Gordy, the lead producer of Motown Records, was doing fine. Then the 80s happened. The Motor City tanked, synth music took over, and Barry had the brilliant idea of trying his hand at filmmaking. Though he'd go on to produce a small pile of documentaries about himself, his one lone venture into creative cinema was this sh*tstorm of a kung fu music movie.

20 minutes of the film consists of the actors watching Bruce Lee movies. And those are by far the best parts of the feature.

Bursting with Jheri curl, neon dancefloors, prop boomboxes, and day-glo costume design, this film stands as a sobering reminder that we can never let the abomination that was the 80s ever happen again.

So bad it's good?

It was really shockingly bad, an all-time low for Motown, but it was every bit as overindulgent and self-absorbed as the decade itself so it was hilarious to watch.

In my eyes, John Carpenter can do no wrong. I have his complete filmography on my server, and we just ran a JC marathon a weekend or two ago.

Years of subtitled anime have left me fine with subbed movies, but if there are two versions of the same movie, both of the same quality, with one being in English and the other not, I'd just rather START with the English one.

I saw this yesterday, by pure luck - it was on tv and I was just supposed to turn it off an start a game, but I saw Tom Hanks and decided to give it a shot...
3 hours later (the movie itself is 2h long, but I had to endure an hour of commercials..) I was really glad I did, though I have to say it was an emotional rollercoaster to put it mildly.
I don't think I've ever seen a movie that is as sad as this one, and so cheerful and energetic at the same time. So emotionally shattering and inspiring at the same time.
I rarely see movies like this -they bore me. When people get emotional I get frustrated.. but not here. And to be honest I'm not sure why.
From the reviews it seems most people either love this movie or hate it, either find the depth I found or can't find a trace of it. One thing many reviewers seem to miss is that the boy is mildly autistic, this explains much of his seemingly bizarre behavior.
Anyway, I found the whole experience absolutely stunning. The movie broke me emotionally and then fixed me back up. And to be honest I think it actually helped me with some of my personal issues.
Give it a try.

Tonight movie feature: DOWNLOADED (2013) by Alex Winter (Bill S. Preston, Esq.) with music by DJ Spooky.

It's the full story of the young dudes who built Napster and the explosion of file sharing that followed its demise, with an incredible amount of personal footage from 1994-2000.

Highly recommended.
