Wonderful and bizarre film. Don't let the romantic comedy tag scare you away, it's a somewhat funny film that centers around a couple's relationship. I don't want to give anything else away because you should go into this one blind (think Exo said that in his review of it as well).

Loved that flick. Definitely go in blind.

Snatch

I liked Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels a lot more, the whole crazy mesh of coincidences in that one was more well done. This was still a good and enjoyable film though.

I think Snatch is movie that really rewards repeat viewings. When I first saw it, I felt the way you did: I liked it but not nearly as much as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Then over time and more viewings of both, I eventually came to prefer Snatch by quite a bit.

Snatch

Love that movie.

Right. Let's sort the buyers from the spyers, the needy from the greedy, and those who trust me from the ones who don't, because if you can't see value here today, you're not up here shopping. You're up here shoplifting. You see these goods? Never seen daylight, moonlight, Israelite. Fanny by the gaslight. Take a bag, c'mon take a bag. I took a bag home last night. Cost me a lot more than ten pound, I can tell you. Anyone like jewelry? Look at that one there. Handmade in Italy, hand-stolen in Stepney. It's as long as my arm. I wish it was as long as something else. Don't think because these boxes are sealed up, they're empty. The only man who sells empty boxes is the undertaker, and by the look of some of you lot today, I'd make more money with me measuring tape. Here, one price. Ten pound.

I could definitely see that. I plan on watching this one to my dad (he doesn't know much about films beyond what he saw when he was growing up and what I show him) when I come back home, so I'll see if that holds up. Still thought it was great, nonetheless.

Borgman

This creeped me the f*ck out. Like, really did.

Borgman is a psychological thriller/overall creepfest of a movie from The Netherlands. There is a certain creepy I’m pertaining to when I describe this film. It isn’t creepy like how Zodiac, The Innkeepers, or any run of the mill ghost story is. This film relies heavily on the unsettling nature of German folklore. There is just this extreme sense of unease that washes over you while you dive further into the film. There are no explanations and very few answers at first glance. It’s kind of a mystery.

The story is rather simple on the surface. A man, who doesn’t seem to really have a home, job, or purpose, successfully invades the home of an upper class family by appeasing to the wife. He stays on the property, just out of sight, getting to know the family better. What follows for the rest of the film is an assortment of what the **** with a side of nightmare fuel. Seriously, nightmares are a big part of this film. You know, I can’t remember if there was a score or not, but if there was it was minimal. Alex van Warmerdam, the films director and supporting cast member, carefully constructs his shots that not only look beautiful, but completely add to the sense of dread and darkness that permeates from the film. It’s been described as a black comedy but I didn’t find anything funny with it. It’s also been described as a cross between Dogtooth and a Haneke film. The only real comparison I can see with Dogtooth is that it mostly takes place on the property which is very out of the way. The Haneke comparison is spot on though. There is just something about his films that etches into the brain and causes all sorts of unsettling emotions. The way Cache, one of my favorite films of all time, plays out is on par with this. We aren’t given any answers to what is going on. Any violence is disturbing, fast, and realistic. It’s unsettling because it feels real.

Haneke however has not really delved into the supernatural. This is where Borgman is unique. Sure, there aren’t creatures flying around or portals being opened. There are events and progressions that just can’t seem to be explained any other way though. It’s a genre blender and a half.

I urge you all to see this one. It’s on Amazon Watch Instant and most likely VOD. It’s a nightmare on screen without the fire and brimstone of a trip to hell. It’s thought provoking, unique, and wildly experimental. You’ll finish it without a clue in the world as to what you watched but if you’re like me, the answers will start to slowly creep in. Are these answers correct? I have no idea. It’s fun to find out though.

4.5/5

^Just watched that. Definitely caught the Haneke similarities but I don't think it was quite as thought out as his films tbh. The Dogtooth comparison I can see as well in terms of dark vibes, plus the way it sets things up without explanation is similar. I agree on the dark comedy element not being strong enough to call it one, even if there were a few parts that made me giggle.

I don't think I'd rate it as highly as you did, but after reading some of your analysis on your blog it made me rethink it a bit. It's definitely thought provoking, I might give it another viewing.

One of my favourites. Wrote about it here some time ago.
I actually found it to be so humorous, that it almost eclipsed the creepiness.
Although my mom, to whom I strongly recommended it, said it was so creepy, it was at times unpleasant.
You should see some other films by van Warmerdam, he has some great stuff.
I've so far seen Abel, The Northerners, Waiter & The Last Days of Emma Blank and they were all a lot of fun.

The whole connection to German folklore is what put it over the edge for me. I love that kind of stuff.
