Man Bites Dog
Watched this on a spur-of-the-moment the other day. Like Cannibal Holocaust with a black sense of humor. Best thing about it has to be that, even though it was absurd and tongue-in-cheek, it was still a brilliant look into the persona of a sociopath: charming and charismatic 90% of the time, even when he's doing terrible things, but as time goes on, he slowly becomes more and more manipulative. And when something doesn't go his way, all of a sudden his nice guy act stops. Usually a movie about someone like this spends all its time making them look like a creepy monster, and while this one did as well, it's lighter side made him seem a likable and fun guy to be around at the exact same time... you know, unless you're black. Can't say that I loved the movie, but it was definitely a fun watch. P.S. Thank god for anime subs. If nothing else, they've trained me to be able to watch subtitled movies and not look like a dumb American.

It only took an hour to start getting interesting. Rich people who can barely do anything for themselves playing detective to get away from their boring lives. The ending was so nonchalant and just... sloppy. I've only seen a few Allen films and so far this one is my least favorite... snoozefest galore.

And Midnight in Paris can suck it.

Out of the Furnace.
Starts very slow and takes a while before you become invested in the characters. What a freaking cast and they all act their asses off. Glad I stuck with it. Spoiler for Trailer:

Headhunters (2011) A nice bit of modern noir from Norway about an art thief who gets entangled with the wrong person. It has kind of Coen-ish feel to it—tense and brutal but it also doesn't take itself too seriously. |

The Ascent (1977) Holy crap, this is one of the most powerful films I have ever seen. It deals with the standard war movie trope of some soldiers sent behind enemy lines but does it in such a magnificent way that it is far and away the greatest film about war I've come across. The shot composition and the pacing are masterful, and it's really sad that the director died young and this was her last film. I feel if she was given a chance to make more we'd truly have a female director on the list of filmmaking giants. The performances though, they make this film a classic. The two leads are devastating, with every single expression on their faces displaying a multitude of emotion. You can tell just by looking at these men that the war has had no mercy. What really seperates this from the genre though is the message of the film, which has a strangely poignant philosophical edge, examining death in a really interesting way. Five stars, couldn't recommend this enough to any fan of cinema. |
