His debut film Seul Contre Tous (I Stand Alone) is up there with Taxi Driver in terms of visceral power and is a little easier to watch (only a little!). His film Into The Void has never been released here due to it's content, would love to see it.

Thanks Bob!

I appreciated the story line. I really did it reminded me of May.
That and I am tapped out on ghostly horror films. The plot was different, abd 8 worthy.

I Stand Alone stays with you....forever

Into the Void is a psychedelic nightmare....and would literally kill someone with epilepsy

why is it banned in the UK?

"Tapeworm" was one of boo boo's sockpuppet accounts here after he'd been banned.

It's distributed as Enter the Void in the states. I'm surprised to hear it's banned, I don't remember it being all that disturbing. Matter of fact, save for the cinematography I thought it was pretty boring. Haven't seen Irreversible, been meaning to.

~~~
I just watched The Road-
It's an adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy book of the same name. I haven't read it so I don't know how it compares. The son character annoyed the ****ing **** out of me. Good god was that kid whiny, even if he wasn't whining. It's the post-apocalypse, toughen up a bit ffs. That complaint aside, I thought the film was just okay. The acting, costumes/makeup, settings, etc. were all very captivating and immersing but the pace of the film is just bleh. It felt like a majority of it was just watching the father and his son wander through the woods. Beautiful, but not so much after and hour and forty five minutes with not much else going on. There's a recurrent theme of maintaining morality under desperate, unforgiving conditions but nothing really cathartic. It's all just bleak, mundane, and slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Any time anything remotely exciting happened it just dissolves instantly in an anti-climactic letdown. Maybe that's the point, because it definitely adds to the feeling of hopelessness. But it's not much fun to watch.
Man if it's a matter of shock value and found footage charm, and you dig that particular rush (I know I do), you oughta check out 'August Underground Mordum'. Granted it is, cinematically, a total crap movie with almost no plot and the only discernable message is vague social commentary unless you're really trying. But the disgusting, disturbing sh!t that happens is VERY convincing. Really sick stuff, puts every other exploitation film I've seen to shame in terms of pure depravity. Highly recommended if you dig that kind of thing.
Also as for banned movies I believe Cannibal Holocaust and Salo (120 days of Sodom) are both banned in multiple countries. The former legitimately tortured animals for entertainment though and taped it, so screw that guy. Both good movies with plenty of 'visceral power' (great description) regardless.
I really have to ask though what scale of rating you use here.
I mean, 8.9 is near perfect. If a movie like American Mary is an 8.9, a film like Shawshank Redemption would be a 42.0. Even in the context of horror I would say if American Mary was 8.9, Halloween or ANOES would be about a 64.3
Not to say I do not accept that this is your opinion, I certainly do.
I just think that movie was pretty middle of the road. It was not awful, but I do not think it is in the ranks of near perfect.
I liked the idea of the film. It certainly tried to go for something that could have been interesting. But the writing is really what stopped it in my opinion. Was rather predictable too.
