It's been over a month since I watched a film, closest I got as half of predator and half of alien, before that going way back was the azumi films i think, I have watched 2 seasons of prison break mind you. *druels over great tv*

Cloverfield was complete ****.

I Am legend was average.

Juno was really cute.

I also hired out 28 Days Later, Chucky and Planet Of The Apes.

I just watched Amélie for the first time in about five years - I'd forgotten how brilliant that movie is. Amélie Poulain is really quite a charming beautiful lady. The irony is that while she could help everyone else and feel content for the meantime, yet she couldn't help herself and wasn't truly happy. While she set up the schemer Joseph with Georgette, he effectively sets a trap for her. Amélie almost throws her chance at romance away, yet it is the sheltered Dufayel who sends her the recording which inspires her to go for Quincampoix, her true love (carpe diem!). Ironic because she had been sending him recordings showing him the world, because he would not seize the day and preferred to live a sheltered life.

A beautiful scene was the one where she thinks all is lost but imagines Quincampoix returning to her, and her hopes are elevated when she thinks he's coming through the doorway but it's only her cat. The film soundtrack is great (19 tracks recorded in 15 days) and the cinematography is stunning.

Eastern Promises - 8/10

Not what I was expecting, but Viggo is great and the whole naked knife fight is spectacular.

Just saw There Will Be Blood. So amazing. Daniel Day-Lewis is such a great actor.

THE CORE

Absolute twaddle from beginning to end.

adidasss 01-27-2008 02:21 PM

 That was on tv here a few days ago...my God...what were Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank thinking?!

jackhammer 01-27-2008 02:31 PM

BLACK SNAKE MOAN
http://www.collider.com/uploads/imag...vd__large_.jpg

I don't quite know what to make of this one. A tale of two lost souls who are seeking redemption through each other. Jackson's catharsis is through music and Ricci's is through ermmm...companionship? Justin timberlake is also in this and he is quite frankly awful in this. Some plot points are never truly resolved and supporting characters are not fully written. However the blues soundtrack is excellent and Jacksons performance along with Ricci's is very good and the blues gig in the bar is wonderfully shot. An interesting but flawed film.

cardboard adolescent 01-27-2008 06:19 PM

man I loved that movie. nothin like watching samuel l tie up a white skank and putting the fear of god in her.

jackhammer 01-27-2008 06:27 PM

Yeah but she was'nt really scared though was she? Cute panties though!

Ornette 01-27-2008 07:59 PM

Just saw Amarcord, directed by Frederico Fellini. Gorgeous film, highly recommended.

jackhammer 01-27-2008 08:02 PM

Fellini <3. discussed only one or two pages back in tis thread i think.

I did DPS in two different years of high school English. Not a bad movie.

My last watched movies were Transformers and A Clockwork Orange. Transformers was disappointing... mainly because I'm not a huge fan of action films. The main character was incredibly irritating (with banal character buildup), there was a lot of cheese and it felt quite contrived/pedestrian.

And it was actually the first time I saw A Clockwork Orange. I thought it was quite good really. Maybe slightly overrated, but it's clever. I like how it questions the ideas of goodness and choice.

I watched Clerks II and Lucky Number Slevin again yesterday

Clerks II was long overdue and I don't think it had the same impact as the first one but it still had it's funny parts....I'd totally fight someone over Star Wars lol

I tried watching The Shooter but I was tired when I started it and fell asleep on it

ANGEL-A
http://www.bioscop.cz/_web/_filmy/b_...12_angel_a.jpg

This was Luc Besson's first film for seven years when it came out and it is his most personal. A director who can sometimes be accused of style over content nixes those misconceptions and gives us his most personal film yet. A down on his luck guy is contemplating suicide, but ends up saving a 6ft blonde woman who has the same idea. Their relationship initially built on mis-trust, develops into something more profound. The first hour of this film is fairly unremarkable and is a slight retread of similar themed films (I can't name them as it may give spoilers away), but then comes the mirror scene. This has to be the best five minutes Luc Besson has ever written and directed. The emotional resonance is absolutely overwhelming and stunningly played by the two main leads. This scene is the catalyst for the final half hour which is nothing short of mesmeric.

The film is Besson's ode to Paris and draws comparison with Woody Allen's Manhattan. Both are shot in stark black and white and deal with loves insecurities. This shooting style is far removed from Besson's sometimes opulent shot's, consisting of many picture postcard simple framing shots. Besson seemed to be looking for inner peace on this film. I think I found some too.

Ellen Page annoyed the fuck out of me in HARD CANDY and I have heard mixed reviews of JUNO. I may catch it on rental instead.

cardboard adolescent 01-30-2008 05:30 PM

^ Fully agree with you.

The last thing I watched was Mighty Aphrodite which means I've watched most of Woody Allen's self-starring self-directed movies... and it was definitely one of the better ones.

jackhammer 01-30-2008 05:35 PM

Manhattan and Annie Hall are surely better though?

Haven't seen Hard candy but yeah, she didn't sit well with me either, although I wouldn't say she was terribly annoying...perhaps trying a bit too hard to be quirky and original. Regardless, it was an enjoyable experience. I said this on a different forum, it's like a foul mouthed version of the Gilmore girls, and I was a fan of that show so...It's nothing spectacular (and definitely not deserving the Oscar nomination especially when you consider that 4 months 3 weeks and 2 days was not nominated, and that film is a freakin' masterpiece!), but far from a waste of time or money...or time in my case...:)

jackhammer 01-30-2008 05:42 PM

HARD CANDY failed on so many levels for me. I'm still in raptures over ANGEL-A lol

Maybe, but not by a very big margin. Deconstructing Harry is probably my favorite Allen movie at the moment.

Nosmada 01-31-2008 02:21 PM

Cloverfeild it was awful some monster just shows up out of no where, kills everyone, and it ends out of no where. I also felt sick for the first 10 minutes. 4/10

Surprisingly good. I liked The band's visit more (the would be Israeli candidate for the Oscars had it not been disqualified for having too much English  ). This can't touch 4 months... either though.
4/5

THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO is one of Woody's greats too.

You know, every time you use caps I get the feeling you're shouting. Which makes you read/sound a bit nutty... ;)

GravitySlips 02-01-2008 06:57 AM

last night I watched Lost In Translation again. Great stuff...I'd never noticed the My Bloody Valentine song in that before, but there it was. SWEET AS A NUT.

cardboard adolescent 02-01-2008 08:10 AM

Marie Antoinette opens with Gang of Four...
I do like the soundtracks for Sofia Coppola's movies.

It probably does seem that way. I do it to let it stand out and hopefully get people interested, but comes across as rather naff. Maybe I should just change the colour instead to highlight it.

djchameleon 02-01-2008 04:58 PM

I finally saw Near Dark...thanks for the recommendation, JH.....I have to watch it again because I was tired and fell asleep but I enjoyed the parts I did see.....I also read somewhere that they are planning on remaking it

Nosmada 02-01-2008 04:59 PM
