Fermat's Room. Very decent little Spanish thriller that has the tension and feel of Cube with the mathematical vernacular of Primer. Four maths geniuses are in a room to solve enigmas but if they don't solve them within a minute the room shrinks on all sides and it's a guessing game as to why they are there. Implausible but very entertaining.

I heard so many bad things about this movie but after watching it I am like WTF people? it's based on a comic and pays homage to it, visually it looks superb and has some great set pieces. Sure the fight scenes are a little far fetched at times but it's ok when it's frigging Spider Man or whatever. I thought this was a little belter.

Sort of an Aussie version of The Commitments but with undertones of racial and political issues that enhance the story yet the film still keeps a warm heart and humour. Great soundtrack and well acted by all. A little gem.

I try my very best to hear about films across a multitude of platforms but still distance myself from the actual plot so Flight proved to be a welcome surprise and a far deeper film than it appears to be. I am going to say no more apart from the fact that Denzel Washington is superb in this film and your empathy changes throughout the film for him.

This is the 1962 version. I saw a Blu Ray rip non colorized version. Black and white is perfect for this film.

I had just finished the book (read by Jeremy Irons) and so want to try on the film. I liked both. MPAA restriction in 1962 was quite an obstacle and required that much be left to the imagination. Stanley Kubrick does an excellent job of walking us up to the door and then blocking the keyhole.

The film is shot backwards - starting with the ending. It works.

In the book Lolita is supposed to be 12. Sue Lyon is 14 and looks 18. Other than that, I think it was a fair representation of the book. Claire Quilty's role gets expanded in the film as a device and a needed device to contract some plot points - the film already runs 2.5 hours. Quilty is played by Peter Sellers.

Looking forward to the newer version.

I'll admit that when it comes to excessive gore, but it was still a great film.

Just watched yesterday Re-Animator a film I hadn't seen since the mid 1980s. I knew it was considered a cult classic and boy what a great film this truly is in every aspect and it even has a level of gore that even I can manage:)

I loved this movie but the only thing that I didn't like was the ending. I wanted to see the big epic battle and they left it with a to be continued ending.

Prisoners

Prisoners debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and placed 3rd in the People’s Choice category. I say it was well deserved. Denis Villeneuve, who directed on of my favorite films ever in Incendies, heads this film about a child abduction and how two men try to find the missing children. The film has a stellar cast comprised of Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Terrance Howard, Paul Dano, Melissa Leo, Maria Bello, and Viola Davis. I mention this lot because I think the acting was the highlight of the film as we get a powerhouse performance by Hugh Jackman and great subtle performances by Viola Davis and Paul Dano. The rest were great as well but the aforementioned stole scenes for me. Jackman is going to be in consideration for awards and until Oscar season comes to an end is my favorite male role this year.

The title of this film holds true to the story as Denis Villeneuve shows us many instances of how people can be taken prisoner. It’s really hard to go into this film without revealing spoilers but I’ll try my best. The cinematography in this film is outstanding. The camera paints a very bleak landscape very very well. Lots of rain and overcast skies that pair up with wonderful camera work during many of the films nighttime scenes. This is a very deep film that really makes the viewer try to determine who the victims are in the grand scheme of thing. What do we do when somebody takes somebody you love? What happens when you think the police aren’t doing the best they can do? I left the theater thinking that the end of the film, while fitting, didn’t quite determine the fates of those involved. This in no way deterred me from liking, even loving the film, as it gave me a lot to think about. This is a film that shows you just enough to be incredibly powerful and disturbing without threatening to beat the living snot out of you with it.

Prisoners has some fantastic twists and turns and fantastic performances from the cast. It’s Seven, meets Zodiac, meets Gone Baby Gone but just so unique in its own right.

The musician Plan B makes his directorial debut and damn is this a great film. A series of vignette's slowly draw together in the films last third with cause and causality, hope and hopelessness and unknowing redemption making a satisfying whole despite being set in the locale of South London - innit, bruv, ya get me vernacular spouting forth but there is a moral compass present and for a debut writer/director it is impressive stuff. The soundtrack by himself is impressive too with many of his tracks melding into narration for back stories of many of the characters.

I didn't know anything about this movie but on closer inspection we have Jeremy Renner who is an OK actor, Gemma Arterton in leather and Famke Janssen too so despite that awful title it was worth checking out and so glad I did. What an absolute blast! Everything Abe Lincoln Vamp Hunter should have been. Great action, OTT gore, tongue in cheek script and still retaining elements of the fairy tale. A great beer movie.

Despite the film being 16 years old, I never got around to watching this but glad I finally did. Based upon the novel by Carl Sagan (who I admire a lot) it touches upon many subjects: faith, religion, self belief, cosmology, physics but doesn't always maintain a consistent whole (it's part family drama, melodrama, sci fi, political thriller, action film) but for a big budget hollywood film it held my attention and certainly makes you think about faith and what it means to different people.

Before seeing the movie, I was interested to see what most websites had rated this at. It was rated very poorly for "unnecessary amounts of crude humor" but honestly...I thought it was hilarious and clever at some points. It had a large range of actors that I really like and seeing McLovin in a movie again was awesome. It's perfect for a relaxing night. If you want a good laugh, I'd definitely recommend it.

This Is The End

Saw this at red box and I figured I'd get it since the popular opinion is that its the funniest movie of the year. Um...really? I didn't even get halfway through this movie before turning it off. Its basically what would happen if The Hangover and Pineapple Express had an ugly deformed baby. I'm sorry, but the typical Seth Organ, Jonah Hill formula is getting old. I didn't mind it much in Knocked Up but I was honestly expecting something really really funny. This movie was easily the most disappointng of the year. Not worth the hype.

Also, keep in mind that I cannot stand The Hangover movies

What about This is the End has anything to do with The Hangover series? Also, Jonah Hill played a completely different version of what he normally plays. I truly believe comedy is subjective and don't fault people for not liking a movie but your reasons don't make any sense.
