I am more freaked out by viewing Antichrist TBH. The DVD has been sat on my shelves for 2 years now and I still haven't watched it.

the thing that I really liked about the movie is that they threw in everything that adults are scared of: clowns, creepy ass dolls, possessed kids.

John Dies at the End (2012) It falls apart a bit toward the end but I loved this most recent effort from Don Coscarelli. It's unique, wacky, and just the kind of movie that creeps it's way onto my favorites list. If you love movies like Repo Man, Liquid Sky and Buckaroo Banzai the way I do, then this is definitely a movie for you, but it's certainly not a movie for all tastes. Machete (2010) I admire Robert Rodriguez for his DIY ethos but I seldom love his movies. This was the exception. Ball to the walls awesomeness from beginning to end. Loved it. Lady Snowblood (1973) Harsh Japanese revenge movie with gorgeous cinematography that feels at least ten years ahead of its time. This was a heavy influence on Kill Bill and it's very noticeable. Great stuff. Haywire (2011) I tend to have mixed feelings about Steven Soderbergh's movies and this was no exception. The cinematography was gorgeous but the overall mood and the the music that contributed greatly to it was certainly an odd choice. Despite being a spy thriller this entire movie felt very downbeat, even the fight scenes. I still haven't decided whether I like that or not. |

The Lives of Others (2006) Not sure how I missed this film until now. An East German couple in 1984 are under survelience from a a Stasi officer. This is an excellent political suspense thriller as well as a fine in-depth character study. Watched the film on cable but will definitely hunt down a dvd copy. |

The violence it depicts is really not what stands out as bad to me. Rather, it's the whole doomed feel of the thing, the subject matter, the atmosphere it creates and the feelings it stirs. I don't think it was a very hard watch, but I think going into it with the wrong expectations could lead to disappointment. Although I guess everyone knows by now that this movie's soul is pretty much pitch black. I believe Von Trier admitted to being clinically depressed when making the movie and it shows. Quote:

Neither performance was particularly outstanding, but if you look at the film as light entertainment then I would say it's worth a watch. For example it's an apocalypse film but at no point does it even attempt to offer a back story, such as why the world is ending, it simply doesn't go anywhere near it. It offers stories of enduring loneliness, seeking companionship and family in the face of the world coming to an end. I thought there was enough there to warrant an above average grade, more around the 7 mark or something. I would buy it on DVD or Blu Ray - if I found it at a cheap price. |

The Dark Knight Rises It was okay but not really the trilogy capping second coming everyone seemed to be expecting. I liked Joseph Gordon Levits character and expect him to transition into the comics the same way Batgirl and Harley Quinn did and I thought Anne Hathaway did a fantastic job as Selina Kyle. Tom Hardy's Bane was an admirable attempt at creating a menacing villain, but overall I just don't think it worked. Gary Oldman is still the best part of this trilogy, and funnily enough Batman is still the least interesting, although made better now that he was hardly in it. Overall while it's good that Christopher Nolan's trilogy redeemed Batman after the state Joel Schumacher left it in, I really hope his new incarnation in 2015 differs from this one. The Avengers Loved it, loved the action, loved the narrative, loved the pacing, and loved the chemistry between the characters, specifically Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Loved how they paid homage to the source material and remembered that superheroes are meant to be inspirational to everyone, not just adult fans. Definitely excited about Avengers 2: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy. If anyone else watched this one Netflix, did you notice the sound to be really awful? Like when you have to have it cranked up during the talkie scenes? I found both of these films to be like that, The Dark Knight Rises especially. It was so bad I actually had to watch it on my PC with headphones so I could hear what the fu*k people were sayin. |

Only God Forgives This is a love it or hate it film. Nicolas Rending Refn is a visionary and a talent that is going to be making interesting films for years but he's going to stumble every once in a while. Yet, his stumbles are beautiful. It's like watching an olympic figure skater fall with grace. The film is gorgeous. GORGEOUS. It is also very brutal and benefits from a wonderful soundtrack from Cliff Martinez who worked with Refn on "Drive". Your eyes and ears will love this film but your brain is going to have some problems. First off it's very ambiguous and full of mysticism. The film was dedicated to Alejandro Jordoworsky and it shows as a lot of actions taken by the characters have no real meaning or reason behind them. There is no protagonist or antagonist and one of them may or may not be "God". These are a lot of questions without many answers which is why the narrative of the story falls flat. The film does deliver as I said on the eyes and ears and is full of twisted and disturbing scenes of violence and immoral actions. It's provocative without being obscene or trashy. It's a film that most audiences will hate but few will love. I'm somewhere in the middle and as always, looking forward to his next experiment with the camera. 3/5 |
