I saw The Purge earlier today and thought it was pretty good actually. Simple, pretty straight forward horror movie.I like that it relied on suspense to make it worth watching, and not over the top gore. I thought it was pretty old school and I liked that. Was the acting fantastic? No. Was it a bit predictable in spots? Sure. But its horror and really there arent any horror movies winning an Oscar, you know? Anyway, it would be a fun movie to watch if someone was planning to stay in and watch scary movies all night or something. Good times.

Surely there has to be around 20 mins running time missing from this film as it clocked in at a mere 83 mins and feels rushed. The budget for this was less than half of the original so maybe that's it which is a shame. The direction and set design was decent enough but it severely lacked atmosphere and the fact that the characters used exposition dialogue every ten minutes robbed the film of any sense of foreboding and interest. Shame. I lasted about 25 mins so maybe this shouldn't be posted but note to film makers : if you are going to use hand held cameras constantly then don't have scenes in the film where the shots are seemingly not from any camera source at all. It defeats the purpose and Gyllenhaal looks terrible with a shaved head.

Football films are often turds. This one was quite predictably structured and rather cliched in places, but was actually rather decent. It's a rags to riches kinda thing. Mexican immigrant living in LA, meets an English former scout who invites him to England for a trial at Newcastle united. It features little cameos from some of the Newcastle squad of the time such as Alan Shearer, Jermaine Jenas, Lee Bowyer etc, as well as David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and a few others. Not amazing but I liked it. I hadn't seen this for ages. It has a decent enough cast, but its kind stupid in places, as over the top as you might expect from a typical action film and why, oh why has Cage been a cast in a role where he needs to put on a horrible, southern American drawl? It's been so long I'd forgotten just how bad the accent is. |

They really need to make a football movie based on Robin Friday.

When I first saw the trailer for this one I was anxious to see it but also skeptical. I’m always skeptical when it comes to comedies. I have favorites but most were made in the 70s and 80s such as Airplane! and basically anything Bill Murray touched. Today there have been a few I liked such as Anchorman, Step Brothers, Superbad, and Pineapple Express, but there have been some horrible ones such as anything with Vince Vaughn or Adam Sandler. This is the End is joining the former group. I loved it. It’s so off the walls bat**** insane that it’s hard to believe that some of the scenes actually made it into the film instead of being deemed too ridiculous. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg make their directorial debut and also pen the film. It centers around a party at James Franco’s house and that’s all you should know. Watching the trailer isn’t a bad thing but man does it help not knowing much. Every funny person under the age of 35 is in this film and it really helps that they’re all playing themselves. This is a movie where the actors can actually joke about their own careers and the careers of others. They know what people say about them and now it can all come out. It was a great experience to see a bunch of real life friends make a crazy ass hysterical movie like this. Michael Cera is the only one who doesn’t play himself, at least I hope it’s not himself. The end might be the funniest part of all. It’s a cameo you did not see coming. Hysterical. It’s one of the funniest movies to come out this decade. I mean that. See it with a bunch of people. Oh god Michael Cera…what have you become? 4.5/5 |
