Touche soulless corporate executives. I am intrigued. Throw in actual footage of Nargothrond and Gondolin and we've got a deal.

I think the explanation that they're just doing it for the dollahs is a bit simple. Of course the production company wants to squeeze what juice they can out of the lemon, but the production team I believe have great love and respect for the works of Tolkien and wants to work towards telling the story in the best possible way.

Well I think Hollywood is finally waking up to the fact that the geek demographic is probably the most lucrative right now and they're going to pander to them. On the one hand it is kind of crap because there was something really special about the first Lord of the Rings movies or the first Iron Man/ Dark Knight movies that really made up for some of the flaws in the movies. Now that The Avengers made a bajillion dollars and there will be new Star Wars movies it seems like we may be getting a little over-saturated, which could lead to some stagnation if studios decide to go the safe route. That said though, I've pretty much enjoyed all the "geek" movies that have come out in the last 4 years so I'll save any judgement till I've seen it for myself out of respect for the balance that Hollywood seems to have found between people who care about making a good movie and the bean counters in accounting. If nothing else it's nice to see genre-fiction really taking over the scene and with any luck it could actually start to be taken seriously at the Academy Awards.

oh yeah the age of the geek has started :)

Besides last year's Green Lantern I don't really think there's been a bad superhero movie since... I dunno, the last Fantastic Four movie in 2007 that I'm pretty sure most people have forgotten about. Although I wasn't a big fan of the Spider-Man reboot, but that was done to appease the bean counters so I wasn't holding out any hope for it anyways.

I've never been a fan of superhero movies. Not that they're bad...just not really my cup of tea. I will however say that the second Iron Man was pretty bad.

My favourite superhero movie is Watchmen, but then it's not really a superhero movie.
