Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

I introduced John Carpenter to my roommate last night. She doesn't do horror otherwise I would have chosen The Thing but I decided Big Trouble in Little China would be the best introductory movie. This movie still makes me smile every time I watch it, especially considering how like half the cast have appearances in episodes of The X-Files, with Wang and Lo Pan showing up in the same episode. My roommate definitely enjoyed the movie, so I can probably talk them into watching They Live (1988) with me some time later on this week.

They Live .. What a strange movie. Excellent idea and concept and all, but the execution is more than a little odd. Like that really butch and drawn out fight in the back alley!

That scene is one of the greatest moments in the history of cinema. :laughing:

Pretty much what I was thinking, it just went on for so long and was so different from the rapid editing style fights we're so use to seeing in movies. It's probably up there with the fight scene between Macduff and Macbeth in Polanski's Macbeth (1971) that stand out scene-for-scene in my mind.

Well this post is going to encompass what I watched the last week not counting the three days I didn't have power. I just got back to work today so it's been a whole week of nothing to do. I also watched the first two seasons of Game of Thrones and a lot of Sons of Anarchy.

Gorgeous color scheme. Wonderfully weird soundtrack. Completely forgettable movie. Sorry, I know you horror fans are probably going to eat me alive but I just didn't like the film. I'm still going to check out the rest of Dario Argento's work because he seems interesting but this just didn't do it for me besides aesthetic pleasures.

Again, boring for the first third of the film but I REALLY enjoyed the last part of the film including the famous burning scene. Definitely more of a suspense movie than a classic horror but it was disturbing enough for me to enjoy it. I also couldn't tell it was Christopher Lee until the very end. I'm used to seeing him with white hair and a long beard.

I was surprised on how much spanish Tommy Lee Jones can speak. He directed this one and it was pretty interesting. Barry Pepper gave a good little performance and the film kept my attention throughout. Jones should direct more films because the direction was nice.

Excellent film. EXCELLENT. I don't quite understand the controversy about this one though. Apparently it ruined the directors career. I guess it was just the time and place. The film was great though. Very suspenseful with a great screenplay and performance by the lead who looked a lot like Jon Voight but talked like James Mason. Weird

I liked Royal Tennenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom a lot better. Bill Murray was fantastic as always and it's a Wes Anderson film so I can't ever say it's bad. I even enjoyed Darjeeling. I don't know why it took me this long to see it but I'm glad I finally completed my Wes Anderson filmography. He just makes wonderful little movies.

Holy **** that was awesome. I ****ing loved it. One of the most brutal and enjoyable action sequences I've ever seen and it lasted 45 minutes. I actually haven't seen any of Takashi Miike movies besides this so I'm going to get that ball rolling because this was just awesome and beautiful. Can't recommend seeing it enough if you like action films. And it's still on netflix instant.

I really liked it. I felt it was like a companion piece to Pan's Labyrinth due to the nature of kids versus evil. Labyrinth was of course better but this was pretty good as well. I always enjoyed Del Toro's screenwriting more than his visuals but of course his visuals are impressive as well. I'm going to start watching more of his movies again since I recently sat in on an interview that Chris Hardwick gave him. The dude is awesome.

Oh man was this ****ing boring. This might be the SLOWEST movie I've ever seen. Now, don't get me wrong, it isn't bad, if you don't mind that NOTHING happens at all. The one thing that made me finish it was the camera work and the acting. There must have only been about 40 shots in the whole two hour movie. Lots of long shots.

Good thriller, pretty damn suspenseful. Ben Affleck has definitely cemented his reputation is a good director, if not a particularly unique one. Bryan Cranston was great in this, it's awesome to see him play a different but equally intense role as he does when he's being Walter White. 8/10

Definitely want to check this out. I liked the Town also. And his first, I killed my dead lesbian wife, what a great name. :)

Skyfall... well its not classic James Bond but still good. Not the usual flashy Mr. Bond with girls and gadgets... its more of an introspective Bond who is still soul searching.
