I loved this, a very humourous off-kilter film. Richard E Grant is superb in it.

I loved this movie. Very funny, and the monologue at the end was fantastic.

Brilliant. One of the best ghost horrors I've seen. Must read the short story some day.

Was pretty good, but not like amazingly fantastic or anything. I thought Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law had a fantastic on-screen chemistry that worked so well for Holmes and Watson. I also really loved the score. Wasn't disappointed with this movie, definitely worth a watch!

Great movie, loving it so much more now that I'm watching it for the second time, and at least I know which artists they're talking about. Thumbs up for Diabolo Cody.
Really lovely soundtrack ... should give it a spin once in a while.

One of my favorite movies ever. You should get around to watching Adventureland, really great movie.

seconded. one of my favorite coming of age flicks. and kristen stewart is smoking.

Dieselboy 01-05-2010 08:22 PM

Finally saw Avatar. Was pleasantly surprised tbh. I was expecting it to be all graphics and pretty shallow going in, and the first hour of the show actually had me leaning that way even more. Seemed to be some plot holes, and maybe that scenes had been cut to cut the time down or something.
After the first hour though I found it pretty enjoyable, I have to say. The action was definitely strong, and the plot wasn't bad.

There was some other stuff I was gonna say here, but I suppose I shouldn't be a spoiler, so oh well.

Oh yeah...we chose not to see this in 3D, and about half way through I realized how stupid a choice that was. I was DEVASTATED. I'm probably gonna have to go back now and see it again properly. :|

Rickenbacker 01-05-2010 09:40 PM

I'm gonna go ahead and third Adventureland. The Lou Reed references were to die for. I loved it.

adidasss 01-06-2010 03:14 AM

I stopped watching Adventureland after about 30 minutes, can't stand Jesse Eisenberg.

I've been meaning to watch this for a while after seeing Snatch and enjoying it, this is definitely better than snatch. Guy Ritchies films seem very samey but this one was brilliant, so funny and gripping.

Great movie. Not better than Snatch IMHO but still great.

They are hard to choose between but I felt Lock Stock had something about it.

Just watched

I watched it a while back but never finished it, appreciated it a lot more than the first time I watched it. 7/10. Good film. Set up nicely for the sequel as well.

Fascinating tightly woven tale of one man who has just had enough and changes the course of his life forever in one night. Imagine a sort of Taxi Driver without the carnage crossed with Falling Down but without the crappy acting. It's David Mamet so you know it's quality.

Haven't got round to watching Analyze That yet :(

boo boo 01-06-2010 12:45 PM

You really don't have to.

FETCHER. 01-06-2010 03:48 PM

Watch Analyze That? Isn't it like a sequel type thing?

NumberNineDream 01-06-2010 04:04 PM

^yeah, kind of a repetition, but I enjoyed both.

FETCHER. 01-06-2010 04:09 PM

I thought it would be a very repetitive sequel but I'm not too bothered. I enjoyed the first, so I'm pretty cetain I'll enjoy the second! :D

How was Julia Stiles in this one? She seems to be either really, really great, or incredibly terrible in her films.

She was great in this and her role was pivotal in the film.

Fantastic. Because IMO, when she's good, she's really good. Going on the backlog...

Why did you think it was pretty bad?

I thought it was alright. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law had such a good on-screen chemistry together that worked so well as Holmes and Watson, I thought. It had its flaws but overall was an alright film.

Yeah, same. It helped that Robert Downey Jr. is pretty much one of the coolest actors ever.

Visually stunning, slowly building, I loved it. A bit slow perhaps for some, and the 3 hour total is forboding, but being broken into 4 different stories helps quite a bit. Can't decide which was my favourite story, thought they were all great.

Shake 01-06-2010 08:04 PM

I watched the first part of Spike Lee's 4-part "When the Levees Broke". Depressing as hell, honestly, which was why I stopped after the first part. I'll watch the rest a part at a time over the next week.

It's truly disgusting to see what appears to be a third world country smack in the middle of the richest country in the world. There are scenes that look like they were filmed in Calcutta.

Ooh, I disagree. Before 2007 or so he was just a drug addicted has-been, and his career resurgence as of late has yielded movies that have been spotty at best. Iron Man was good, but I found his character in Tropic Thunder absolutely terrible. And The Soloist... god that was a bad movie. I've yet to see Holmes though, so we'll see.

I agree, Downey Jr. can do just about any role that is put in front of him, I thought he was great in Tropical Thunder. He really came back after the media tore him apart for alcohol/drug abuse.

Hmm.... well Iron Man for me at least was pretty much made by his character, so we agree there. I thought he was funny in Tropic Thunder, and while the Soloist was bad it's not as if his performance was bad. In fact the reason I didn't like the film wasn't because of any bad acting, it was because it tried to be far too artsy and deep, which made it boring as hell.

I think it's just that he's so cool. Especially in Iron Man and Holmes, to a slightly lesser extent.

Astronomer 01-06-2010 08:18 PM

I'm with Rickenbacker on this one, I really don't think Downey is that great - there have been roles he's had that I just thought weren't good at all.

But in Holmes he does a really great job, brilliant roles by both him and Jude Law in my opinion.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is another more recent Downey film thats at least worth watching.

Although, it wasn't a big role he was good in Zodiac which is one of my favorite movies of the last decade.

I don't know, Zodiac kind of bored me. It was really slow moving while it seems like it was an exciting story I don't think the movie really captured that.

Well, it's been quite a long time since I've seen Nick do a role that tested his mettle, and he delivered in an outstanding fashion here as a cop who is both degenerative and likable all at once. Absolutely fantastic direction from Herzog too, though that goes without saying really. This might be my favorite 2009 film!

NumberNineDream 01-07-2010 10:41 AM

^ I was afraid the film would disappoint me as I always have high expectations for a Werner Herzog movie, good to see that wouldn't be the case.
