Was a great social commentary for the first half. Didn't really like much of it toward the later half after the guy met the girl, although there were still really great parts.
Basically, the movie is about a guy who gets sick and tired of the stupidity and absolute crap that goes on in America and snaps. Sorta "Falling Down", but comedy.
Also, there's a movie theater shooting scene...
I quite liked it. I mainly watched it because I'm interested in what Bobcat Goldthwait is doing as a director and I got the impression that this is his anti-american rant. Still, I liked how the characters in the film criticize with american society coupled with the irony of how they become part of the problem.

Entertaining flick, but not as good as World's Greatest Dad which, I believe, is Bobcat's previous movie starring Robin Williams (who did a very good job).

I logged on just now solely for the purpose of recommending 'God Bless America' to those who like their comedy dark. Like, really dark. I just watched it recently.

I like 'World's Greatest Dad' quite a bit but I like 'God Bless America' much more. Unlike tore, I never sensed that the main characters were ever part of the problem at all. Pure heroes, I felt. Didn't pick up on any irony. Interesting.

Also, I had no idea that Bill Murray even had a brother, let alone one who has been a working actor since the 80s.

One example of how I think they are part of the problem is : early in the movie when the main character watches the news, there is some story of pointless, violent viciousness on the telly. It is one of the parts of the bleak backdrop which gets Frank down. I'm pretty sure protagonist Frank would not have liked news that f.ex some guy got killed because he took up two parking spaces, yet ..

Spoiler for God Bless America:
Frank (as he is corrupted and his idea of the "deserving" gets wider) eventually does things like shooting a guy for taking up two parking spaces and rudely refusing to give one up, thus adding to the increased viciousness of American society which he himself does not like. Or at least did not like before he became a killer.

I really enjoyed World's Greatest Dad, so I guess I'll have to give this a shot.

I just saw The Cabin in the Woods a few nights ago. It was... sort of refreshing. (Also, I find it funny how hard it is to talk about the movie without being spoileriffic.)
Spoiler for The Cabin in the Woods:
I didn't like actually seeing the giant hand of the Ancient One underneath the cabin at the end. Something about it made the movie shift too far into the fantasy direction. It kind of killed the mystery. And I felt that the horror trope deconstruction was sort of ham-fisted. Especially after reading people compare the control center operators to horror film directors and the Ancient Ones to film audiences. Don't get me wrong, I get that a film as blatant as The Cabin in the Woods was kind of necessary, I just tend to personally prefer a little more subtlety. That's probably just me being artsy-fartsy, though.

Fair point but...

Spoiler for more about God Bless America:
while he was clearly walking the moral line, and the double parker wasn't necessarily a terrible person, Frank always emphasized that his hatred stemmed from the fact that America had descended to the point that rudeness and loss of general decency was acceptable and even celebrated. He also just plain hated a lot of people and their behaviors.

It drove him to feel vicious as we saw during his talk with his co-worker in the cubicle. Some of the early murders were of people acting rudely and obnoxiously in a movie theater, after all. Also he fantasized about shooting a baby point blank before he ever did anything to anybody.

I think that the Frank we saw in the beginning would have been much happier to see on the news that these kinds of killings (not the baby) were happening than the things he was seeing on TV at the time.

Also, I watched the entire thing with the idea that it was more of a farce than a satire so I wasn't very critical of any of Frank's actions. Then again... I'm American and I never got the impression that Frank had even become corrupted, so maybe I'm part of the problem myself

Spoiler for God Bless America:
Interesting take on it

I wrote corrupted as he is persuaded or goaded into increasingly more violent acts by Roxy who really is more "evil" than he is and a bad influence.

But you could be right in that there's no intentional irony from the point of view of the director. Of course I strongly feel that you can't improve on a culture by going around murdering people and that these are evil acts.. but on the other hand, thinking about what you wrote, I didn't feel like I was supposed to be critical of Frank's actions because noone else in the movie is.

I definitely felt it was a bit of a rant against american society with Bobcat holding up a mirror showing us something relatively close to the truth with regards to stupid TV shows and so on (which were all parodies or copies of real life shows). I'm sure I saw that sweet 16 girl who gets upset because her parents got her the wrong car on telly once. That sort of stuff irritates me too!
