ok....so i went into this film completely blind except for a friend telling me that the film is a verbatim telling of the book.....i'm really torn on this one....let me first say that the cast was exceptional....all of them played their rolls very well.....i'm not sure if it has to do with my age and the obvious demographics for this film but it seemed to me that the most interesting parts of the plot were completely ignored.....

the film starts off almost feeling like it's going to be set in depression era Appalachia but quickly the viewer realizes that this is in fact a district....12 to be exact of lower/working class people who do all the work for an advanced society of over the top rich people who construct a tv game where they force these kids to kill each other for their enjoyment

so my problem....i found what little we were told of the back ground of this post-apocalyptic world to be very interesting....there was a war, the separation of classes, the hunger games themselves...all of this i felt really deserved some looking into....but nothing at all was really explained.....rather the film concentrated on the game.....which in all honesty was full of every stupid cliche there is......there was one scene that was sooooo built up....i mean like 40 seconds build up and ended in by far the biggest let down of the entire film.....the end was abrupt and predictable and the film making looked more like a network made for tv movie than a blockbuster film

i feel that had they spent more time on this society itself and its origins i really would have enjoyed this movie and would have probably ran out to get the books and read them.....but the game itself was fucking stupid....i only cared about one character and already knew she would win.....overall this was a bad mixture of Orwell/Huxley, Battle Royale, The Truman Show, and Twilight (stop with the stupid love triangle bullshit!!!!!)

still i'm curious enough to watch the next film

in end this is not worth your money....download it or wait for netflix as it would probably look better on tv anyways

Thanks for this, bob. I was skeptical about seeing the film for the bolded reason. Thanks again for the only light on the film not coming from my 12 year old sister.

anytime

you know i went with two friends and we had beers before and after.....before the film we were discussing the fact that so often the previews will set up how good the film you are about to see is.....horrible set up for this one.....Spider Man looks lame, Avengers looks laughable (in a bad way).....don't get me started on Dark Shadows....What To Expect When Expecting (shaking head right now) and of course Breaking Dawn part 2.....ehhhh the only good thing about that one is hopefully the ending of that series

so there ya go

A lot like Everything Must Go where you expect a comedy because of the cast involved but what you get is a serious movie that happens to be funny at times. Ed Helms character was a douchebag and Jason Segal's character was retarded. Yet, it wasn't as bad as you would think because the writing was okay. I'd say wait on this one but if you don't it won't be too waste of time.

Wow. This movie surprised the hell out of me. I haven't seen Tom McCarthy's first two films but they're on my list and I think I might bump it up. This one was funny and endearing and it never once fell into old cliches. When I thought a character was going to get all bent out of shape, they didn't. It was smart writing with a great performance by Giamatti.

I thought I was going to like this a bit more. I think it was just the story that kind of dragged a bit but Damon and Law were both incredible. Damon deserved an Oscar nomination for it but that was a strong year for male Lead. Overall it was above average.

7/10

The most biased documentary I've ever seen, but there was no other option. What I mean by that is that it was shot entirely from the video camera of two victims of Hurricane Katrina. There were no there interviews of government officials but what was seen is powerful and the most in depth look at what happened I've seen. Great film if you wanna see first hand what happened those two weeks.

8/10

Good movie. Oswalt and Theron were great in it and the writing was better than Juno which I didn't care for. Depressing at times but rewarding performances kept it afloat.

7.5/10

Average crime drama with a perfectly cast Hilary Swank and a memorable role from Sam Rockwell. Had it's dull moments but also it's heartwarming ones. Not bad.

I think that's a little harsh. I went and saw this last night with no knowledge of the books and I was thoroughly entertained. It was predictable, but it was well done and very much worth the $5.
