That's what I thought too, it reminded me old '80's actin movies like The Exterminator, The Toxic Avenger, Vigilante, and Street Trash. Basically the low budget high violence exploitation action movies of the 1980's that depict urban blight and decay and try to have some kind of message attached. I think too many people went into Hobo With a Shotgun expecting it to just borrow the aesthetic of those movies, not to actually try and mimic it.

I'm not into the ultraviolence typically, but it was a fun romp in Helltown. Poor Rob Wells lost his head too soon though. I wish he'd been a major character, but someone needed to set up the idea of how dire things were.

Oh man, Street Trash had like no plot whatsoever What a strange film .. The opening scene where the bum flushes himself down the toilet was pretty cool, though.

I totally understand the notion that Hobo wasn't supposed to be serious and that it's intent was to be a fun, funny, and violent romp through the streets of Hell Town. Frankly if you kept the plot and hired a decent writer, this movie could have been a new name added to a list of classic grindhouse/gore-y films (Planet Terror/Machete/Evil Dead/Dead Alive). It was just a bad movie. The writers seemed like they wanted to shock the audience and that was it. The dialogue was just atrocious. This is obviously based on taste and sense of humor but I didn't laugh once at any of the lines delivered by any of the actors. Some of the deaths were entertaining but the whole "school bus" scene ruined everything for me, which wasn't much. I really didn't need to see that. If they were trying to display the sadistic nature of the brothers, well, you already did that like 20 times before he entered the school bus. Not needed.
It's the same point and argument that I'm telling people on why I have no intention of seeing Project X. You don't need to just shove shock and awe into my face for an hour and a half. What is that doing? There have been plenty of party movies before that have been great at giving me a bunch of scenes showing how crazy people are at parties while also giving me an actual movie. Hobo with a Shotgun just screamed "EVERYBODY IS CRAZY MURDERS! SEE? SEE US MURDER PEOPLE? CRAZY OR WHAT?" Some people may like that, but it's just not for me. Anyway, I saw two movies tonight. I think I gave myself too high of an expectation for this. Don't get me wrong, it was a great movie. I found myself pretty impressed with the visuals, music, and of course Marty's amazing gift at directing. I loved every single second that they were talking about the history of early cinema. Ben Kingsley and the kids were great. What I just couldn't get myself into was the actual story of the movie. The main plot just took a complete backseat to the visuals and portions of early cinema. Not many movies have had me go from being immersed in a movie to being somewhat bored. I think it deserved it's nomination for Best Picture because besides Tree of Life, there wasn't another film that was shot so well. It deserved all the awards it won with the only exception being that I really wanted Planet of the Apes to win best visual effects but Hugo also deserved the award. Overall it was a very good film that I thought could have been great had I been more intrigued in the plot. 8/10 I'll be honest. I multi-tasked a lot during this movie, and it was very late at night...still is as I type this. From what I saw and paid attention too (about 80%) it was an average modern military story that had it's intense moments couple with lull dragging dialogue. I wouldn't recommend seeing it but certainly wouldn't recommend not seeing it. 6/10 |

I do remember laughing out loud once or twice, but not what it was that did it. Odds are I was laughing at it and not with it so to speak, but still I didn't lose any enjoyment from the writing. Maybe I'll pull up a copy of the script if I can find one and browse through it for an example. Meh... but in your favor, I remember scoffing at the speech the hooker gave to the mob about homeless people. It touched a nice note, but didn't come across correctly. I appreciated the message, but not the soapbox style speech or the mob reaction. Quote:
