Yeah it is Ironclad.

Paul Giamatti as King John was awful, but James Purefoy was good as the lead character. Overall, I think I actually preferred Solomon Kane (which he also stars in) for entertainment value.

I hated Solomon Kane! It felt very forced to me. I understand where you are coming from regarding Ironclad and alluded to it regarding it's script but I really appreciated the filmmakers attempts to make the film as realistic as possible and not resort to pretty picture blockbuster leads and scenery etc.

Giamatti was a very odd choice in one respect for King John but his speech in front of Brian Cox just before 'THAT' scene was superb.

Oh frustration time again :( There is a superb movie here dying to break free from the filmmaker's indecision as to what sort of film it is. Is it a black comedy, a satire or a serious drama with commentary on big business's? The film's second half certainly suggest serious drama and there was some really good scenes both thematically and visually but the films first half relied too much on wanting to look, feel and sound hip.

The film could have easily worked on any level but certainly not a mish mash of all three, the director just doesn't have the chops for it.

Agreed. It's certainly entertaining, and had a good twist. The critics really tore it apart, but i thought it was better then a lot of the hollywood bloated budget drivel.

I hate myself for guessing the twist :( There is enough clues in the film.

If there's any film in dire need of a remake or reboot or something it's gotta be this one. Better acting and effects and this really could be a great movie. That said though, it's cool to see musicians like Ice-T and Henry Rollins in a mid '90's cyberpunk movie.

The Expendables

Man, what a weird masochistic fantasy trip this was. It seems like the actors were cast for their advertising rights more then their actual likeness in the film. All of the actors, excluding stallone and statham, only make brief appearances. When the other actors do have screen time it's usually buddying up with stallone, which produces some god awful chemistry. The films attempts at comic relief are shockingly poor. That being said the action is very satisfying and graphic, I was a big fan of Rambo 4 and this is very much in the same vein. Plus seeing stone cold steve austin fighting stallone was a real treat, and probably a wet dream to wwe fans residing in their mothers basement everywhere.

Don't go into the film expecting any form of cohesive narrative, because it is very absent, to the point you wonder if they hired any actual screenwriters. Part of me believes Stallone came up with the story to this film by playing with action figures.

Dolph Lundgren was the actor I appreciated the most in this one .. It was nice to see him again, even though his role was a bit of a Richard.

"Guys, who's the most underrated actor in hollywood?"
"Dolph Lundgren!"

From the comments: Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Crime, Penetration, Fade to black, Roll credits.
Sounds like a perfect movie to me.

Expendables would have been better if they'd made fun of the fact that there was no plot whatsoever, rather than trying to manufacture this ridiculous story. These guys are known for one thing - their ability to star in scenes where **** blows up. Trying to add some sort of emotion to it failed horribly in my opinion.

Don't forget that the director ended up deleting scenes because they were "too normal." You know you're in for an acidic mindfuck if that is one of the key elements of the film that you're watching.

I'm about five years late on this one, just watched it last night. I thought it was excellent, all the awkwardness of Napoleon Dynamite except with real character development and amazing subtleties.
