most of the actors in Watchmen I don't even know, nor could i care to remember, besides the guy playing Rorscharch who also played the new Freddy Krueger (both roles which had the actor in masks most of the time, anyway)
LOTR was full of B/C-List actors like the guys playing the hobbits, Orlando Bloom who was fresh out of school or the guy who played Gimli. I'm not even sure Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood could be considered A-listers before Lord of the Rings.

I did recognize some of the actors in Watchmen, like Patrick Wilson who played Nite Owl who's also played in movies like Hard Candy. Billy Crudup who played Dr. Manhattan also played in my favourite Burton movie, Big Fish. Jeffrey Dean Morgan who played The Comedian was in P.S. I Love You.

Not that it matters much to me. I think they all did good roles, particularly The Comedian and Rorschach. The only casting I didn't like was Carla Gugino as Sally Jupiter, but it was a small part.

Ian McKellen was a pretty esteemed Shakespearean actor in Britain

Elijah Wood starred in some blockbusters

Maybe you would like this, I did. He is the last person I would have chosen for the role but seems to do a pretty damn good job in my humble opinion.

I still think you'd have to agree that the LOTR movies did have a lot of relatively unknown talent in them, also in their key roles.

which blockbuster didn't?

people like Lucas seem to like casting unknowns in the lead roles, only famous for that particular movie, and never heard of afterwards, i.e. Hayden Christiansen (though I heard he did some remarkable indie films)

I just thought it weird that it seemed to be one of the things you didn't like about Watchmen. As for Hayden Christensen's role as Anakin, it was worse than Jar-Jar. His role as Anakin Skywalker and Kristen Stewart's role as Bella Swan in the Twilight flicks (the wife's fault) are the two worst casted main roles I can remember seeing in film series. I find both highly annoying to watch!

it's not just that they're mostly unknowns, most of them didn't really fit the roles, besides Rorscharch, which was an admirable job

for example, Nite Owl was hardly as geeky in the comic, showing quite a lot of self-confidence

Dr. Manhattan I'd picture with a booming God-like voice, not a whisper

stuff like that, ya know

LOTR I think got the casting right with its mix of well known esteemed actors and lesser known names. A lot of the actors that some might also think of as being lesser known are actually very well known on UK televison and film Ian Holm, Ian Mckellen, John Rhys Davies, Bernard Hill, Sean Bean and the most esteemed of them all Christopher Lee one of the two faces of Hammer.

yeah, i'm quite familiar with Holm, Rhys-Davies, Bean and Lee

Lee was the actor that slipped my mind when i wanted to retort to tore - he was in almost all the Hammer Dracula movies
