do you really need to "get" it?

he needed to battle the exes to prove his love

But surely you understand that given the way the film was presented, like a video game/comic book superhero kind of a film and the nature of some of the fight scenes, like the "rock-off" one, that for someone who had no idea what to expect from the film it was all a little bizarre.

I don't NEED to get why it was done that way. I enjoyed the film. I was just curious whether or not a familiarity with the comic books beforehand would have helped me to understand why they made the film they did.

yes, the comic was done in the same way

pop culture references, RPG elements, superheroics, bizarre sci-fi

I love it, all my friends hate it. I tried to show it to them and they wouldn't even sit through the first half. I thought it was a great B movie. I really enjoyed the ending, so you really should watch the whole thing in my opinion.

Anybody else seen this whole thing?

One of my New Year's resolutions are to watch 366 movies, I've never seen before. I'm two days behind, but I'll catch up this week. These are the movies I've seen so far.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 8/10
Muppets Take Manhattan 5/10
Man on Wire 10/10
Kick Ass 4/10
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 6/10 (I do admit I'll have to watch it again)
The Hangover Part II 2/10
Crazy, Stupid, Love 7/10
I Love You Phillip Morris 7/10
Troll Hunter 8/10
Time Bandits 5/10
Dead Snow 7/10
currently watch High Noon

John Landis (An American Werewolf In London etc), good start. Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis - even better. Cameos galore (Ray Harryhausen, Bill Bailey, Paul Whitehouse etc) - bigger smiles. A story ripe for comedy that was absolute tosh. It looks fantastic but it failed on every level. Awful.

Where the Buffalo Roam

Not as good as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but it has its own charm and Bill Murray makes a good Hunter S. Thompson. My friend had never seen it but he's a huge Bill Murray fan so I figured I'd plug this gap in his filmography.

Thanks Pete, that was great as far as I'm concerned. I mean, just about all my friends have seen Fear and Loathing and none of them have heard of this. It was a great treat to watch and I can't wait to recommend it to the guys.

Bill Murray made an excellent Hunter. This is one of the best roles I've seen Murray do. He did some solid acting here. How often can you say that about Murray? :P

His characters are a bit same-y, but besides that, I think he's quite good. His roles in Wes Anderson films in particular, like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou or Rushmore, has many nice subtleties and he's always funny to watch.

Is this a rewriting of the book of Job? Or is it a poem about the Norse tree of life Ydraggsil? Who cares? I don't and neither should you. Had the film been merely disjointed gorgeous images like in the first hour and the final 1/3rd, I'd had given this 10/10, no contest. But in the middle, though I like Malick's ponderous meandering style, it just isn't very interesting, the story of the boy and his father and brother. 6/10
