as opposed to something Anglocentric like Split Second (horror-comedy based on Alien)

Because if you grow up in a country and spend all your life there, you will gain knowledge of historical trends through whatever media you consume, stories you are told and general interest in history. However, you will never get that with foreign countries (I wouldn't consider the UK and USA "foreign" to each other in the strictest sense) unless there is a vested interest in the particular traditions of that nation.

I think what it proves is that people will overlook average comedy because of the nostalgia, rather than anything else.

I think we have discussed it enough at this point. Let's talk about Withnail & I because I plan on watching it tonight!

And Duce, that's their loss

well, we don't have a "vested" interest in Anglo-American traditions

it's just our way of consumption, and mostly because we "do" export

Malaysians are probably the most Westernised amongst the Asians

Of course most intelligent people will pick up cultural norms from most countries and generally have an idea of what you may expect to see in their Film/TV due to what is imported/exported, but I don't think it's the same as me watching a film about the 80's which isn't even that striking in it's nostalgic references.

^^I haven't seen Hot Tub Time Machine so I reserve my opinion

I got all of the references in The Wedding Singer, despite not quite being around in America in the 80s (though I was around in the 80s), and I thought it was funny, though these days I can't really bring myself to watch another Adam Sandler movie

True. And the comparison I was making is that, for someone who grew up after the 80s, that decade is essentially a "foreign country" that they can only really experience as an outsider. You can learn all about politics and popular culture of the time but you can never have the experience of having lived through it.

I think the flaw in that reasoning is that the people in question aren't overlooking the comedy, they're laughing hysterically at it.

I was enjoying the conversation actually—the reasons why different people find different things funny is something I find fascinating—but okay.

I've never seen Withnail & I but I'd like to. It's one of those movies I have to admit I'm worried I won't like, though, because it's been talked up a lot to me.

I agree that it was more cleanly executed, though I do think the plot was considerably weaker this time around. Much more straight-forward. That being said, it was still a great watch and I enjoyed it.

I know jackhammer gives it a 5.0 on his RMR, as have I (I think). I don't want to raise your expectations, as I am sure they are very high already, but it is pretty much my favourite film ever.

Starting watching it in a few minutes. EXCITED

Just re-watched Full Metal Jacket. There is such awesome camerawork in that film.

It's funny that you mentioned that movie since I just discovered a bunch of amazing (and funny) Kubrick posters designed by Viktor Hertz. This is the one he did for Full Metal Jacket:

Others can be seen here.
