Sarah's Key

The rest of my book club and I watched this, because we just finished reading the book. After trying very hard to separate the two in my brain, I've come to the conclusion that the movie really was just fair. The acting in some places even made me wince a little, and I'm no film snob by any stretch of the imagination.

However, looking at the two together, I'd say the present day part of the movie just didn't have the same build up and impact that the book had. As a whole, the book ripped my heart out. The movie barely stirred me at all, with the exception of one part where
Spoiler for ::
she finds her brother dead in the secret cabinet. Good lord...

Over all....2.5/5 stars.

I think his American accent is really, very good too. Actually that's why he was cast in House. The writers/directors were in disagreement because one of them wanted Hugh Laurie and the other insisted that House would be played by an American actor. The one who wanted the American (it may have been David Shore, I forget) didn't know who Hugh Laurie was so he read for the part, they were in absolute agreement afterwards, and he thought he had "won" by finding an American actor to be the right man for the job.

I basically wasted today watching these two;

^ In the hands of a (much) better writer and director, this could've been good. Watch it only if you want to see how a fairly quirky and interesting concept can be completely misused and therefore wasted.

^ Actually, this wasn't so bad. Trouble is, it wasn't so good either. There's some very interesting character development, and the premise is again interesting, but there's far too much narrative padding and that god-forsaken seasick-cam direction with the camera work.

I've got Feast, Zelig and Hariold and Maude on tomorrow's to-watch list. Here's hoping it'll be a more interesting one than this bunch.

I can't state how much I dislike anime. But I was convinced to watch this movie, and it was pretty damn impressive. Especially technically, considering how stunning the visuals were and it was completely hand drawn.

Now anime is like county music to me. I don't like country music, but I like Johnny Cash. I don't like anime, but I like Akira. 8/10

Way better than you'd think. I've got a huge soft spot for Grindhouse, and if you've ever really enjoyed, say, Tarantino or Rodriguez, or even Allison Anders - you'll probably dig this.

I feel pretty much the same. Generally on the whole, I don't like anime. Especially not when it features over the top characters with squeaky voices and hair in funny colours who get all stylized and scream with their arms flailing whenever something doesn't go their way. Akira is brilliant, though, both the movie and the longer manga it's based on. Akira along with Ghibli Studio films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are a few of the animes I can stomach.

Power Kids

I loved this movie. It reminded me of 3 Ninjas but instead of just going to save their uncle they were going to get a heart to save their little brother from dying. This movie has much more heart in it because of the sacrifice they were making.

Carved: The Slit-mouthed Woman

The origin of why this woman has a slit mouth pulls on your heart strings a bit. I didn't even know there was a sequel until I was looking up the movie poster for this one so I might have to check it out. I wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did. I thought it was going to be the typical ghost movie where they just use music and flashes to try to scare you and nothing happens to people. It was much more than that though.

If you liked Hobo, you should love the short film that the same guy directed before he did Hobo.
