Fantastic bad-taste comedy, and Robin Williams does a great job with it.The chat-show scene should have you struggling to breathe.

I've seen just about every Terry Gilliam movie EXCEPT this one, which is ironic in a way because this is pretty much the only one of his that was critically acclaimed. Pretty enjoyable movie, and I have to say this is probably Brad Pitt's best performance.

Very surprised that this was your first viewing! Quality and proof that Gilliam can do style AND substance sometimes. The Hamster Factory 90 min doc is superb too about the making of the movie. Not sure whether this on the American DVD but I am pretty sure it should be.

Have you ever caught Chris Marker's La Jetee short film on which this was based? It is a mini classic in the short film genre although not to all tastes admittedly.

I've heard great things about this but I didn't really like Sans Soleil or A Grin Without A Cat that much. Is it similar to those?

oh and would you guys recommend 12 Monkeys or Brazil to someone whose Gilliam experience has been solely Monty Python?

Sans Soliel is maybe even easier to watch but then the starkness of La Jetee is more preferable to those of a pessimistic inclination!

As for Gilliam. Time Bandits is probably the best stop gap between Python and his solo work and if you can get on with that then delve into his other works.

Brazil is a beast best tackled with a clear mind and a couple of hours to spare though! Maybe follow Time Bandits with The Fisher King and go from there even though he made films inbetween, they are a good barometer of his (dare I say it?) commercial leanings.

Story you should watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it's so sick man. I really, really need to see Brazil.

For me, both The Fisher King and Brazil were movies that blew me away completely the second time I saw them, strange however that might sound. Both are brilliant, but I feel both require a receptive state of mind. They're not your standard beer & popcorn flicks that you'd enjoy with your mates, but The Fisher King can be enjoyed in the company of your girlfriend ;)

edit :

I also like Terry Gilliam's film about Baron Munchausen! It's not brilliant, but it's fun and has plenty of charm. I guess anyone who likes Time Bandits would enjoy it, so you might want to add it to your list. It's an adventure/fantasy/comedy and is, unlike the two mentioned above, a movie you might like with beer and popcorn.

Damn this was a let down. I thought this would be a pretty cool movie, but they bog down the story with all this boring and uneeded symbolic artsy shots that really, really detract from the movie. And it's not like there's just one or two. Almost half the movie is made up of these shots. Some of the scenes were really beautiful but for the most part unneeded. Also, the ending is ****ing AWFUL. Really hastily done, it's like the writer gave up halfway. I guess I'll give it a 5/10.

They Live (1988)

Pretty silly John Carpenter B movie. Decent social and cultural satire of the '80's consumer lifestyle, but I think American Psycho (2000) did it better. It had a ridiculously long fight scene between 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and Keith David that is only matched by the one in Roman Polanski's Macbeth (1971). All in all though I thought it was a pretty decent '80's B action movie that definitely deserves a look.

Haha, that fight scene is hilarious! John Carpenter deserved some kind of award for it.
