I don't know if he's been mentioned here before but anything by Harmony Korine is generally not neccesarily trippy, but insanely bizarre.

Donnie Darko. Each time I thought I'd conquered it, Id see it again I'd realise my theories were completely wrong.

Eternal Sunshine was trippy, but I hated it so it doesnt really count as an answer.

Donnie Darko, there's only one theory isn't there?

Spoiler for Donnie Darko:
Donnie Died to save humanity from being wiped out.

Donnie Darko is a huge mindf*ck. I always imagined it to be in his head, but I really have no idea.

I nominate Eraserhead... love that movie, but damn, it's creepy.

I've not seen it in 3 years, so my memory is a bit iffy when it comes to DD. What not wanting to be alone with Frank?

I wouldn't want to be alone with a man in a scary arse bunny costume..

Well you know how he goes to the therapist and has numerous breakdowns about not wanting to be alone in the world with Frank, as hes about as ****ed up at Donnie? He starts crying and chanting and then theres that one time he starts wanking. Oh, how I laughed.

Frank is actually my nightmare. With that mutilated eye and creepy mask... Between him and clowns, I dont know which ones worse.

Yeah I remember the therapist sessions, but can't remember what was discussed. Why does that have any relevance to the ending of the film? I mean, I guess there's two possibilities 1) what happened is what you saw, Donnie saving humanity. 2) It was all in his head.. and quite possibly a third add on 3) his death was a suicide? but I wouldn't want to be alone with a giant massive bunny either. It freaked me out when I first watched it at the age of 12 as well.

Spoiler for Donnie Darko:
1. But Donnie saving humanity goes back to the time travel thing that the book is always hinting at. By choosing to die himself instead of letting Frank destroy the world he goes through time or whatever. 2. It could all be in his head, a dream of what would happen if he listened to Frank that night. 3. He makes a point in the therapy sessions of not wanting to be alone and that he was scared of what Frank would do. Seeing as Donnie would be the only one to live, he was afraid of being left alone in the remains with Frank, so he did it to not be alone.

In the end, it all comes down to Frank and giant mind****, like someone said before.

I need to watch it again, DD is one of my favourite films. I remember the way I first felt when watching it, it was great. I just can't remember it very well, I remember thinking the only way to sum it up is what I saw on screen, the immediate conclusion.
