Tim Burton has lost his edge. His last three films were adaptations from other peoples works. Don't get me wrong. He is a true stylist within the Hollywood machine but he is at his best when working from his own canvas. The surreal twists can spring from his own imagination and not someone elses. That's what endeared him to many people. It is so hard to hang onto individuality in Hollywood and anyone who does deserve that is Burton. Unfortunately his surrealism has been sadly lacking recently.

as far as trippy films - not sure if this has been mentioned, but eXistenZ definitely falls into the WTF category. its virtual reality theme and its classic Cronenberg stomach-wrenching rawness make for a wonderfully freaky film. as long as you can get past the fact that Jude Law is the lead...

^ Yeah, agreed. Alice in Wonderland looks pretty amazing, although I've been disappointed with a couple of his recent films I really don't think he's lost his edge just yet.
Definitely my favourite trippy film is Waking Life... why so much hate for it? I don't think it's pretentious at all. |

Without a doubt the trippiest movie I have ever seen is Synechdoche New York.
