Excuse my necrobump.
On this poll I'd choose Lord of the Rings but my actual favorite trilogy is almost certainly The Pusher Trilogy by Nicolas Winding Refn. It follows a group of people caught up in the Copenhagen black market / drug trade and basically launched Nicolas Winding Refn's directorial career / Mads Mikkelson's acting career. They're ultra-realistic and well acted, almost to the point where they feel like documentaries, they're very well soundtracked, very well shot for their time and theme, and very compelling emotionally. The three films together have been my favorite movies since I first saw them and are probably the most sincere depiction of low level crime in entertainment media, at least that I've ever seen. I highly recommend them to anyone interested in crime genres or the works of Nicolas Winding Refn.

Horse poop and lazy thinking. I don't know why people hate on the Matrix trilogy so much other than that it made you think and had no easy answers to its many ambiguities. Like any trilogy, it's far from perfect, but I don't think it deserves the sheer vitriol that it gets. I really enjoy those movies and I think they hold up really well. The fact that no one else likes them is probably part of the perverse pleasure...
