I think it's mostly a money issue tbh. Most manga is drawn relatively simply since it's in black and white, so emphasis is given to making it pop off the page with designs that make an immediate impression, but Berserk is highly detailed, even compared to Western comics in color, and animating it properly would require a serious investment in time, money, and manpower. That's probably why the movies and current TV series opted for the combination of 3D and 2D animation, since 3D is cheaper, easier, and quicker to do, even if it really doesn't do justice to the original. Even the 97 series had to cut corners. It does the art style justice (to an extent) but there's a notable lack of actual animation. It doesn't help that it's a series that's hyper violent and probably wouldn't be able to be aired on whatever is primetime in Japan.

Compare the movie you're watching to this and ask yourself if you'd like to read the manga.
