yeah, i see what you mean, when i usually watch a show i'd go check out the dub first, just cause it's easier to catch what's going on visually and not have to multitask with reading.
but hell, i've found some series with fantastic dubbing, like Baccano!, Welcome to the NHK, etc. and there's times, like in Hellsing, where a dub in a different language adds to the overall quality of the show(in this case, how Hellsing is set in England and the English dub features some damn fine English, ****ney, and Scottish accents)

mhmm, dubs can also have an advantage on music influenced stuff. like in BECK, where alot of songs are in english and they feature english bands and american characters along with the japanese ones in both dub/sub, you either have the choice of listening to alot of the songs sung in English (which they were written in) or the Japenese VA's and their "Engrish". not saying that it's bad for them to do that, just that imo it feels a bit more comfortable to be able to listen to clearer songs.
it also helps in the dub that the lead character's voice, Greg Ayres, can actually sing

I watched Mnemosyne recently and damn, I had to look away as some of the torture moments were to much for me. It's pretty over the top sex and violence wise, but it's greek routed themes and the fact that it spanned over 50 years was kinda fresh.

Beware, features fanservice and extreme gore, not of the brutal variety, but the extremely squick variety.
