Can't wait, as I've only heard good things about the book AND the movie.

One of the handful of books I've ever read in a single sitting. Great stuff.

It's great so far. How did you feel about his situation? I'm torn between being jealous and envying his zest for life and ability to leave things in natures hands, and thinking he was pretty stupid and naive and possibly a bit crazy (although I don't really think he was crazy). We had a really heated discussion about this at my book club on Sunday.

I definitely think he was misguided, naive and extremely self-centered. He's actually lucky he didn't die sooner considering the number of dumb things he did. I really feel bad for his parents.

An interesting contrast to him is Richard Proenneke who did something similar but actually knew what he was doing. Proenneke retired to the Alaskan wilderness when he was 58, where he built is own cabin by hand and lived until he was 82 years old. There's a book about him, which I haven't read, but I saw a documentary about him a while back called Alone in the Wilderness which is well worth watching.

Now that does sound truly fascinating. Added to my goodreads.com list just now!
